Can they still employ me with an unrecognised qualification?

I've been looking for a new job and most of the requirements are saying either A-C GCSEs in Maths and English, or equivalent (Functional Skills).

I don't have any of those, but I do have a Maths Level 2 certificate which is not Ofqual regulated but it is evidence of knowledge and skills.

Can I still use this to get a job that "requires" ofqual regulated qualifications?

It’s up to them whether they will accept it or not.

Apply and send a covering letter explaining a little bit about the content of the course, that you realise it's not widely known but feel you have the skills required for the role. That way you make your point but also demonstrate your ability to use written English and your keeness for the job- that would impress me before I even interviewed you!

Most areas run free functional skills courses. Have you looked into sitting the exam?
In your shoes I would just apply and state that your cert is equivalent.

@KatnissMellark that's a good idea I didn't even think of that! I know Indeed gives you the option to add a covering letter so I think I will start writing one out today. Thank you :)

@AJPTaylor shamefully, I've attempted to sit it twice but failed each time because I am so terribly bad at maths. I am really bad! I can do coursework base, no problem! But exams... is a big instantaneous fail.

But then... you’re not qualified, surely? I mean if it’s an instant fail, it’s proof that you aren’t capable of an A-C in GCSE maths?! (Sorry to be blunt).

PinkHeart5914 · 22/02/2019 09:21

But if you’ve failed twice then your certificate doesn’t even show knowledge really does it? As you can’t do it?

If it’s unrecognised what’s the point in it? It’s a worthless piece of paper

Redlocks28 · 22/02/2019 09:23

What’s the job? If it needs a certain level of mastery on maths which you don’t have, you aren’t qualified for it?

I would like to be an educational psychologist. I have an A level in psychology, but not a doctorate-I am not qualified and so cannot do the job.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 22/02/2019 09:23

It depends on the job. If it's a job that requires OFQUAL qualifications, then no, they couldn't offer you the job as you don't have the qualification. You have an equivelant, but they need OFQUAL, so your only option there would be to take an OFQUAL certified course.

If it's just that they prefer people with an A-C at GCSE, then it would be at their discretion whether they accepted your equivalent. We've sent people to complete Functional Skills courses if they've joined without an accepted qualification, with passing it within 3 months being a condition of passing probation.

SciFiRules · 22/02/2019 09:27

I never give the "required qualification" section anything more than a casual glance. Experience, both direct and indirect counts for far more. Many of the jobs I've applied for and been offered had job descriptions containing a qualifications list that far exceeds mine achievements or that of my colleagues.
Just apply, including all relevant information and let the company make the decision if they want to call you.
