Anyone know what how it works if you declare a minor prang to your insurance company in case you need to claim at a later date, but change companies in the meantime? Does it hugely complicate the claim if you're then insured elsewhere?

Why wouldn't you claim at the time?

Probably won't claim at all; it's quite minor after all, or we will just pay for repairs ourselves. This is just a "what if" scenario, if for example, worse damage is discovered down the line.

You would have to claim from the insurer you were with at the time of the incident. Your new policy wouldn't cover you for any incident before it is taken out.

I know that. That's not what I'm asking.
Would the original insurer still honour a claim, even if I had shifted to another provider? (I will of course declare the prang to the new insurers, but would not expect them to pay out).

I think if I'd had an accident and it coincided with me possibly wanting to change my insurance company, I would hold off on the change until everything was sorted. If you are changing because you will be making a saving money wise, this saving could well be swallowed up by the cost of repairs. I could see the scenario of each company denying any payment to you because you either were not, or no longer are, their customer, iyswim. Insurance companies will always try and wriggle out of paying for anything if they can help it.

Well, that's what I thought until I got a ridiculous quote for renewal (not including the prang, for which we haven't claimed). But I've found online quotes for under half what they've suggested (for same cover) and I've now phoned them to say I won't renew but will they honour any claim at a later date, and they've said they will.
So here's hoping.

Yes they should honour the claim. They won't cover any further damage that may occur due to how long you have waited to get repairs done though, like rust for example.
