What were you doing? Did you think it would turn out as horrifically bad as it did?

I remember the men walking out of Lehman Brothers with boxes. I was only 16 ish so didn't grasp the enormity of it.

Bohbell · 20/02/2019 21:08

It was Brexit.

CrazyKittenSmile · 20/02/2019 21:09

I admit I have no idea what crash you’re talking about Blush

CluedoAddict · 20/02/2019 21:11

Also don't know what you are talking about.

Shookethtothecore · 20/02/2019 21:15

I was I work, in a shop, it was like a ghost town so we knew someone thing was up. I was going tho and didn’t fully understand.

The op means the financial crash in 2008. Was the beginning of the global recession and austerity measures we are still in (I think)

RhinestoneCowgirl · 20/02/2019 21:15

Not really, I was in a hormonal fug, pregnant with second child, working part time and toddler wrangling. I wasn't paying much attention to the news at the time...

mwmw · 20/02/2019 21:15

The economic crash of 2008... the credit crunch... the recession... why we had austerity..

Tbh we'd lived through 1992 so 2008 was a bit yeah yeah btdt.

Ofc terrible times, not saying they weren't.

teyem · 20/02/2019 21:18

I was too busy hurling up my guts up with morning sickness and chasing my 1 yo around to care Blush

buckingfrolicks · 20/02/2019 21:18

Yes. I thought my business was doomed. It was really hard times for a few years, had to lay a couple of people off. No pay rises for years. Bloody awful. Bastards.

iklboo · 20/02/2019 21:19

I remember the 2008 crash. And the mid-70s recession, and the 1980s one and the 1990s one.

friendlyflicka · 20/02/2019 21:20

Yes. Didn't really take in the full impact though. Too busy with toddlers. Still think the government should have deemed Woolworths too big to fail.

FlibbertyGiblets · 20/02/2019 21:21

Woolworths still hurts Sad.

HundredMilesAnHour · 20/02/2019 21:21

Yes, I worked in an office building across from Lehman's and we were in a team meeting when we saw everyone on their floor stood up as if they were being told something. And obviously they were! The news broke an hour or so later.

My own dept were all made redundant months later as the credit crunch really took hold. Ironically I have just been made redundant again as Brexit continues to do damage.

ApolloandDaphne · 20/02/2019 21:22

We were in NY for DD1s 16th birthday. The open top bus we were on went past a branch of Lehman's and the guide made a quip about it.

ahhhhheckmecervix · 20/02/2019 21:22

I was just about to start uni and I remember thinking “oh well at least it’ll be over when I finish uni and I’ll be able to find a job when I graduate”. How naive I was Grin I did get part time work straight away but took me like 9 months to get full time work...

GorkyMcPorky · 20/02/2019 21:23

I was a Northern Rock sub prime borrower so I remember it well. There were absolutely no issues with our payments but every month, NR would write to us, essentially telling us to fuck off and find another lender. Couldn't do that. Couldn't sell. Ended up bodging something together by converting to BTL and mortgaging my late DM's home in joint names. We're only out of that situation now as she died and we inherited a share of her estate. She couldn't afford life insurance so the mortgage still had to be paid until we sold everything.

It was a nightmare and I believe it hit people like us, without a silver spoon, the hardest.

Bohbell · 20/02/2019 21:24

“We’ve spent all the money”, remember that labour voters? House prices dropped overnight and me and DH took advantage and bought our house.

SoyDora · 20/02/2019 21:25

Yes, the day Lehman brother’s collapsed was the day I started my graduate scheme at a large bank in Canary Wharf. I remember going to get lunch and there was a really bizarre, somber atmosphere. The bars were full of large groups of drunk bankers. I was convinced my career was going down the pan before it had begun!

bruffin · 20/02/2019 21:28

Yes , my sister was working for Lehman bros at the time. Think she got a phone call from her boss Sunday morning.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 20/02/2019 21:29

I remember seeing the reports in the news. It didn’t really effect us. I was a teenager, parents had very little in terms of stocks. A few people were moved into cheaper schools, economic activity stalled etc. but it’s not like there was a full on recession or something. Reports from overseas seemed terrible though.

Chimmychunga · 20/02/2019 21:30

I only remember when I

PatchworkElmer · 20/02/2019 21:31

I graduated in 2008. Utter nightmare, so many of my friends struggled to find work.

RunningNinja79 · 20/02/2019 21:32

Erm no.

Hadn't noticed a particular crash as such.

Until 2 mins ago I couldn't really put a year on the start of recession let alone a specific day.

RunningNinja79 · 20/02/2019 21:33

Also never heard of Lehmans until now. I was 29 in 2008
