I'm bf my baby and it's constant! We get up mid morning, today it was 10am and he's been feeding since! He will fall asleep whilst feeding but if I try put him down he just cries until I feed him again. He's like this everyday

Any advice?

Normal. Don't expect to do anything but feed until it's established. Make sure you have TV controls, books, magazines, computer/phone, Alexa, drinks, and snacks all nearby and you're sitting somewhere comfortable. Your job is feeding a baby, and it's exhausting. It will get easier with time but don't expect miracles.

One of my babies hated to be put down so became a sort of brooch/accessory for 2 YEARS! I feel for you. x

yep, that's what bf babies do. Only another 18 months/ 2 years to go

He's establishing your supply, it does get easier and less constant as they get bigger and more interested in the world around them outside of you and milk. At 4 weeks they don't even know that you are not actually part of them. They don't know that you're separate.

At about 12 weeks the world around them will start to be interesting. Physically they can't even focus on things around them at 4 weeks, everything's a blur, but by 8 weeks they can focus on your face while you feed and by 12 they can follow other moving objects.

Its developmentally normal and good to hold and breastfed constantly at 4 weeks, but if you're restless and ambitious you could practice using a stretch wrap. I fed dc2 on the go in a wrap from about 3 weeks old, because I had a barely 2 year old, but didn't even try with dc1!

Normal but has he been checked by a lactation consultant for a tongue tie? (Not a midwife, a certified lactation consultant)

GookledyGobb · 20/02/2019 15:54

Meant to say normalish

Yes new babies feed a lot but there should be some gaps between actively feeding where they sleep/rest. Almost constant feeding could be a sign of the baby not transferring milk effectively and tiring

MimiSunshine · 20/02/2019 15:54

Ok pretty normal. BUT it’s feeding on demand not feeding constantly so a few questions:

1.Is he having regular wet and dirty nappies?
If yes then he’s feeding fine, if no then there may be an issue to address

2.Has he always been like this?
If no then it’s most likely a growth spurt, he’s in prime territory for this and is likely to be putting in his order for increased supply.
However check the latch, make sure he’s probably latched on (YouTube) and is getting a full feed before dozing off.
Tickle his feet to keep him feeding rather than sleeping.

3.Has he been checked for tongue tie?
Often TT babies do ok for the first few weeks as the amount they get out is enough to sustain them.
It can cause issues around this age as they need more but are unable to suck adequately to get enough out.
So have you seen him lift his tongue up and / or out?
Can you get to a breastfeeding support group if you have any concerns to get some further advice?

DinosApple · 20/02/2019 16:39

I had a very sucky first born. I was so sore after week one I gave her a dummy. If she was hungry she spat it out, if she was tired she went to sleep and allowed my nipples some downtime!

I fed until 8 weeks, but found it excruciating so that and nipple shields were the only thing that got us that far.

Mindsblank · 20/02/2019 17:33

@MimiSunshine he does have lots of wet and dirty nappies.
It's mostly like this but occasionally it won't be quite as bad although he never wants me to put him down.
He falls off the breast a lot during the day but never at night. He's been checked for tongue tie but he's fine.
