Manicure for elderly nan

My nan is in her 90s and on the dementia ward of a care home. She no longer recognises me, and has become very withdrawn so when I do visit she doesn't talk much. She used to like to have her nails done so I thought I could do this for her when I visit next. She has very fragile skin which tears easily so I'm not sure what's best to use - clippers or emery boards - but her nails do need to be trimmed. She's not very cooperative with staff and being bathed etc so I think that's why they've gotten quite long. What would be best to use, assuming she's happy for me to do this for her. Any tips welcomed! Thank you!

Maybe start with the nail clippers if there is a lot to take off then try to file it smooth? She might not like the sensation of a file for a long time. I think just take everything and see how she gets on with it all with the thought to stopping when she gets uncomfortable. It is a lovely thing to do.

That sounds lovely.

I cut my granddad's nails regularly when he had dementia.

It scared him a bit I think, so it needed a lot of reassuring chat throughout - and getting it done as quick as possible.

He was never a man to go for a manicure (!), but even if he had been I think the amount of time he'd need to concentrate on one person would have been difficult for him. So perhaps start with the essentials and if she likes it, work up?
