Pictures that is, not walls!

I haven't got a lot of money to spend and haven't done any painting since I gave up Art at school in about 1979!

I don't know what to buy or actually anything!

Any tips please?

What kind of medium do you want to use? I find acrylics the easiest to use. Watercolour is more difficult imho and oils more expensive.

I don't know! Probably the cheapest and easiest!

I'd reccomend Atelier Interactive Acrylics. They reactivate with water and you can get a starter set for a decent price. Or you start with Daler Rowney Simply Acrylics or other paints to see which you feel more comfortable with to start.

Check out a company called arteza, they are quite new (been going about 2 years) but they do amazing quality art products at very affordable prices. Free delivery too. Plenty of artist have done reviews their stuff on youtube. I have several of their products and am very impressed with them all. I wish they had been around when I was a poor art student!

Cheap stuff from the Works if you're just trying it out. Set of acrylics, a canvas or two and a set of paintbrush.

For inspiration, see if you can get hold of Winston Churchill's essay Painting as a Pastime. It's free online somewhere. He took up painting at the age of forty, and his advice is just to dive straight in.

Once you've started, he has things to say about being observant, and use of colour, but the important thing is to start.

Thank you everyone. I'm feeling inspired atm (watching portrait artist of the year on telly).
