Grandparent names. What are you or would you want to be called?

A friend is going to be a GP at the end of March and we were talking about grandparents names. My niece has a baby and my DSis and Bil are Nanna and Pops, other GP are Nanny and Grandpa. My mum and dad have always been Grandma and Grandad so are still Grandma and Grandad. The chat got me thinking about what I would be called when I become a GP. I dont want to be a nanny (I worked as one once) but don't know what I would want to be called. What are you called or what would you like to be called?

DS is only 13 but if he has children I'll probably be Nana.

Granny. Because I am posh.

SadOtter · 19/02/2019 15:44

I want to be Grandmama, it had better be a long way off yet though, my eldest is 15 and under strict instructions not to make me a grandmother til I am at least 40 (I'm 30 now) my parents are Grandma and Granddad, ILs are Nanny, Grandpa and Gramps.

I remember my Nanna getting called Nanny once and being really huffy because she is "neither staff nor a goat" Grin

curiositykilledthekat22 · 19/02/2019 15:44

My mum is Nanny, MIL is Granny, both our step mums just go by their names

Gramgram · 19/02/2019 15:49

I wanted to be called Chip, when I became a grandmother but DD vetoed that idea. So I became Grandma, only DGD calls me Gramgram, hence my user name. She calls DH, Grandad and her other grandparents are Nanny and Grumps.

icannotremember · 19/02/2019 15:55

I'd want to be nana. My mum chose to be nanny.

I'm always baffled by choosing your own name - it's something that never happens in any other context. In every other area of life people are named by those who will use the name.

I don't care really, my kids can choose if they have kids - I had the chance to name them, they can name me in return Grin

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 19/02/2019 15:57

Granny and Granda. My gran would never have tolerated "Nan/Nanny" because she agreed with the PP who said she is neither staff nor a goat!

(and we're not posh either)

RomanyQueen1 · 19/02/2019 16:01

me and dh are Grandma and Grandad and so are the other grandparents.

Clawdy · 19/02/2019 16:13

Nana here. Interesting that versions of Nana exist in other countries - it's Nonna in Italy, Nanni in India, Nain in Wales.....and probably others!

outpinked · 19/02/2019 17:01

My mum is Nanna and my DGM’s always were too. My DP hates it, says it sounds common and MIL will be Grandma Hmm. I think I’d like to be Granny.

TheFallenMadonna · 19/02/2019 17:03

I will be Grandma, like my mum and her mum.

KurriKurri · 19/02/2019 17:41

If the time comes I think I'd go for Grandma MyName.
I'd be happy with my DDIL's Mum having first choice of gran names - I think she'd probably choose Nana or Nanny.
Also my xh has a new partner he's been with a while so there'd need to be a name for her - but maybe she'd just go by her first name.

No idea really - I don't set a huge store by titles - it's the relationship that matters and I'd go with something the child is happy to use

I think it's like 'Mama' and 'Dada' - appropriations of noises babies make anyway!

People introduce themselves and pick their own nicknames quite often? I'm known by a shortened version of my name and that's my own preference (my parents hate it).

kaytee87 · 19/02/2019 17:50

Granny / Gran - Scottish (and probably a bit posh)

troubleswillbeoutofsight · 19/02/2019 17:52

I seemed to automatically be Grandma and exdh was Grandpa which were the names my children used for their own Grangparents

BillyAndTheSillies · 19/02/2019 17:55

I'd like to be grandma although it's a long way off!
MIL is Yiayia (DH is half Greek Cypriot) to my DS and my mum is Grandma.

Gershwin · 19/02/2019 17:56

I am Granny to my grandchild.

Luckingfovely · 19/02/2019 17:57

Granny

villainousbroodmare · 19/02/2019 18:01

My name, I hope, same as my kids call me and will call me.

Meet0nTheledge · 19/02/2019 18:05

I quite like Nan or Nana, prefer them to Grandma or Granny. I disagree that it's weird to choose what you are called, we choose to be Mum or Mummy or Mam or whatever by using it from when the DCs are babies. Grandparents need a name from the birth of the first grandchild, long before they can speak and choose.

whiskeysourpuss · 19/02/2019 18:14

I want to be abuela. No Spanish connection but I prefer it to any version of gran/granny & want something different. DC aren't keen but I've hopefully got a few years to talk them round
