What do they mean? “I’d like to see her drunk!”

A few weeks ago I overheard a group of my male colleagues (including my boss) talking about me as they were walking back from a meeting. They didn’t see I was at my desk and I just heard the end of the conversation, they were basically asking my boss how I was doing health wise ( there is no issue here I’m very open about my health condition within my team) but then one of them said “ I’d like to see her drunk!” To which the others including my Boss just jeered in approval in a laddy way. As soon as they noticed me they looked embarrassed and changed the subject.

They obviously know I heard them but it was just so weird that I stupidly didn’t say anything. It’s now been playing on my mind and I don’t really understand why they would want to see me drunk or what it means?, is it a common phrase that other people use that actually means something that I’ve never heard before Confused ??

I’m probably overthinking things but would just like to understand what it means Grin . For context I’ve known most of them almost a decade and we normally chat about all sorts and are all really friendly. Just want to understand so if needs be I can give them a bollocking!!

That seems inappropriate and unkind.

To me it might imply that the person was suggesting that, if drunk, you’d behave in a very different way to your usual behaviour, or in ways they’d consider amusing, eg loud, slurring, weepy.

Bluntness100 · 19/02/2019 13:58

I'm not sure, but it would indicate to me they think you're very straight faced so seeing you drunk and letting go would be funny.

Bluntness100 · 19/02/2019 13:58

Straight laced!

CountessCodswallop · 19/02/2019 14:01

Oh I see, thanks Loopytiles, still a weird comment to make though?! I have no idea why he would say that Confused.

straight faced/uptight i would have thought

CountessCodswallop · 19/02/2019 14:06

Thanks Bluntness100, maybe they all think i’m too uptight lol, I do recall now around Christmas my Boss suggesting I have a drink to relax (not in a sleazy way though) as I was a bit stressed.

It wasn’t a kindly meant comment.

PinkHeart5914 · 19/02/2019 14:08

That your a bit boring/ straight laced and you might chill out and have fun after a drink

CountessCodswallop · 19/02/2019 14:11

As I didn’t know what it meant I didn’t want to jump to conclusions like some snowflake and take offence but it seems he/they were being rude.

I'm not sure they were being rude as such, but yes I suspect they were taking the piss a bit. I doubt they meant it maliciously. Don't worry. People say daft stuff all the time.

CountessCodswallop · 19/02/2019 14:22

Thanks bluntness, I’m not taking it to heart as I’m sure I’ve said worse things to their face Wink I just genuinely didn’t understand what it meant.

Some people are funny drunks. I get really sexually inappropriate and call everyone aubergines. Obviously I don’t drink much.

CountessCodswallop · 19/02/2019 14:28

GregoryPeckingDuck - ha ha well I guess it depends who you are gettting drunk with!
