Do you like where you live?

Where do you live? Why and do you like it or not?
I'm in a commuter town. I don't like it but I'm not sure of where best would suit me.

Where are all these places with beautiful countryside, forests etc, only 20 or 30 minutes from central London?! Please name them so I can investigate if I would like to live there!

I mean I live in zone 3, right next to the tube, and it takes me longer than that to get to work. If I venture outside London it always takes forever.

windygallows · 19/02/2019 19:49

Not really. Am in Oxford which sounds lovely but is wildly expensive, a bit dull and uptight and outside the city centre and north oxford, isn’t particularly attractive. In fact parts feel really run down. Loads of shitty rental properties everywhere that aren’t kept up well. Despite the students doesn’t have much of a vibe and more of a small retirement town. Awfully transient with students and academics coming in then leaving so, I think, lacks a community feel. Town and gown issues still prevail.

It’s close to London, has good hospitals and lovely countryside nearby but as a place to live it is disappointing and a bit soulless.

aliceelizaloves · 19/02/2019 19:52

Small, affluent town in essex, 40 minutes from London. I like it now. I moved from London and desperately missed the excitement and diversity of London when I first moved but it's grown on me. I'll probably never fully feel at home here but I do now appreciate a lot about it, particularly now I have 2 young children. It's surrounded by beautiful countryside, is clean and safe and has great schools. People are generally quite friendly and I'm starting to meet a few more like minded people.

ClarabellaCTL · 19/02/2019 19:58

Shropshire, and absolutely love it here. I'm from Glasgow and have moved around a lot because DH is military. This is by far our favourite place, happy to call it home now and we've bought our own place here. Clean, countryside, safe, great school options. Easy enough to go on the train to Birmingham but to be honest Shrewsbury has lots to offer and we can drive there in less than 15 mins.

QueenofallIsee · 19/02/2019 20:03

I live in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. I was born here and though I moved away, moved back last year. I love it here, good schools, good pubs and it’s pretty all year round

Lovingit81 · 19/02/2019 20:13

Love where I live, love love love it. Beautiful countryside, amazing restaurants. Close to the lakes, Peak District, Manchester but still have the village feel. We are in a nice village in Cheshire.

takethelastslice · 19/02/2019 20:18

I love where we live in rural Dorset. We have such pretty countryside, lovely views, great schools and can be in Bath in an hour or London in two by train.
I really wouldn't want to live anywhere else and feel very lucky.

RollerJed · 19/02/2019 20:21

We moved to Aus as it was time for me to go home for a bit and because of Brexit

We are an hour from Melb and 35 mins from my parents. I'm back living practically where I grew up which has surprised me but I'm really enjoying having family around after 9 years of just dh and I slogging it out with no support.

We won't be here forever, I think we'll head back over at some point but really love being home at the moment.

MinnieMountain · 19/02/2019 20:36

Peterborough. DH is from here and we've ended up staying due to jobs.

We have a nice life. There's a pretty river and countryside nearby. We can afford a big house 15 minutes walk to the town centre. It has good transport links. DS's primary school is good.

We talked recently about moving to the countryside where I'm from. Quickly concluded that life is so much easier here.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 19/02/2019 20:41

A small coastal town on the North West and I love it. Wouldnt live anywhere else. Sunsets to die for and views of the lakes just make you smile. Been here all my life, our children grew up here (and would move back if there was their type of work). Very content.

ForalltheSaints · 19/02/2019 20:50

Yes I do. Seven pubs within ten minutes walk!

PhilomenaButterfly · 19/02/2019 20:51

Yes. It's a very suburban bit of London, hardly any crime.

Paddy1234 · 19/02/2019 20:52

Views of the Malvern Hills
Smack in the middle of the countryside with huge skies
Absolutely love the peace and tranquility

Astro86 · 19/02/2019 20:55

Where we live was mostly dictated by OHs job. We live in a large-ish village (mostly 1960s built estates) outside a small town near Brighton. In some ways it’s lovely: we’re 20 minutes drive to the beach, beautiful South Downs walks and there’s a good community in the village. But because no one (including us!) can afford to buy in the nearby town. (lots of London commuters, very upper middle class hippy vibe) the prices in our village have rocketed, so it’s not likely we’ll be able to move out of our small 3 bed semi any time soon.

I’d love to move nearer home (Leeds, but further out, definitely not the bit OH and I grew up in!). We have no support network here, I miss our families, I miss the moors, and I’m sick of getting funny looks when I talk about ginnels! Hmm

kateandme · 19/02/2019 20:56

Impicciona sounds amazing.any chance you could be more specific.sounds perfect for where my mum and dad want to go on holiday.

Paddy1234 · 19/02/2019 20:59

Waves at @tulipstulipstulips ❤️

Ragwort · 19/02/2019 21:00

Not particularly, it’s a small market town (without a market Grin), quite run down, very insular & no diversity. Public transport non existent. But property prices are reasonable and nice surrounding countryside. I have made friends & have a job that I love but I really hope we move in the next few years.

Strokethefurrywall · 19/02/2019 21:05

Yes, we live in the Caribbean across the road from the beach.

We couldn't think of a better place to bring up our kids BUT (and there's always a but), despite the tax free salaries, living here is astronomically expensive and leaving the island for breaks to Miami or NYC will set you back at least $300+ per ticket.

I'm bringing the kids back to UK for Easter with my family and our flights cost just shy of $2,500.

The island itself is pretty transient because of the vast amounts of expats (I'm a permanent resident now) which is a downside as your friends move on, and there is no way we would ever want to retire here, so whilst we're "settled" here for now, in another 10 years we may be looking for another place to call home.

cjpark · 19/02/2019 21:07

I love where we live - Cornwall. The weather has been good today so wetsuits on and walked to the beach with the dog to throw ball while the kids paddle boarded. We are lucky enough to have well paid jobs for the county and have a lovely house and enough land to keep a few animals. Can walk to the pub and the shop and local schools are excellent.
Dislike the lack of local public transport and the long drive to a major airport.

BadlyAgedMemes · 19/02/2019 21:12

I'm in a small town in Derbyshire - very possibly the miserable half. I do like it, but I've given up on trying to find the perfect place, so I'm happy to settle. We have positives (decent access to Manchester, nice scenery, good services and shops and things to do) and negatives (horrible traffic, a little bit insular). But we can afford to live here and can commute, and it's fine. I know some nice people here, have some hobbies and nice neighbours etc. No idea if we'll live here forever, but I have no current plans to leave, and no particular idea of where I'd prefer.

Oblomov19 · 19/02/2019 21:23

I like it here. It's ok. Just.
Surrey. Superb schools. We walk to school. I walk to work. Everything is on our Doorstep. Nice community. Day to day.

Can be in London in 45 minutes. Brighton just over an hour. Dorset in 2 hours. Shopping I can drive to Kingston or drive south to Guildford.

Everything is ok. If I had another million, (or a couple of millionWink) I'd buy a bigger house into London, on the tube? say Wimbledon. But Dh says he doesn't want to move in, he'd rather move out. He does have a point. Retire? More to the coast?

PoppingBubbles · 19/02/2019 21:31

I am really unhappy where we live in the South East. We moved here as an opportunity came up that we couldn't refuse.
I feel sad here though, and not at home at all, even though I thought I would.

I really want to move to Yorkshire, or Fife. Beautiful countryside, and near to a city. Somewhere that the DC can roam free a bit.

DH doesn't though, and the DC are happy at their school. Feel like I'm going to be stuck here forever. It's actually sucking my soul out Sad

RomanyQueen1 · 19/02/2019 21:43

BadlyAged

Come back, what's it like in Derbyshire, my dd loves it and wants us to move there. Somewhere on the Piccadilly line. She keeps showing me lovely houses we can't afford. She needs to look smaller as downsizing

PalmTree101 · 19/02/2019 21:44

London ‘burbs. Don’t exactly love my area, it was chosen for a compromise of cost v location but I like my house and I can’t deny the location ticks all the practical boxes.

Loved loved fucking loved living in flat in trendy central London. God that was a fabulous location.
