Do you go over your bank statements?

With a fine a tooth comb?
Quick glance?

Reason I'm asking is because I aim to do it once a month (make sure all payments have gone in/out, any requested refunds paid, not charged twice for anything, no rogue payments etc.). But I just never get around to doing it and end, like today, going over bank statements since October. A couple of queries have come up, few I've been able to resolve (in that it was all correct actually) but too long ago for me to remember for a few of them!

Anyone actually had missed/rogue payments or I'm guessing that's really rare?

I check via the banking app every few days. It takes a few moments and I like to know where I am financially... Unfortunately, I tend to fluctuate between living like a pauper and living like a king and regular checking helps me keep a handle on that!

alotofquestionsallthetime · 18/02/2019 18:27

I look at mine every day and every week I download the statement in excel, put a description in it then pivot it to understand where most my outgoings are

cakedup · 18/02/2019 18:28

I don't get paper statements either.

I have a spreadsheet too (well it's a Word table Blush ) with all my outgoings/incomings which I check my bank statement against.

It's just me, no OH so all pretty straightforward actually.

I thought maybe I was being a bit OTT to go through it once a month but it appears not! So I'll just endeavour to keep that up.

I check mine online every day and then skim through the paper statements monthly

BrusselPout · 18/02/2019 18:48

I check my banking app most days to check that bills have gone out as expected, nothing odd has gone on and whether I need to move money around.

It takes 2 minutes

We have MS money so log everything - money in, money out and transfer between our accounts. We can then reconcile each one to make sure there are no surprises.

Most of our spend is on a credit card which we pay in full weekly.

No doubt people think we are sad but our finances would be in a terrible state if we didn't do this. I know I would overspend if we didn't.

I suspect even Martin Lewis would think we were over the top with our finances

I check my bank every morning whilst getting ready - I spotted fraud on my credit card very quickly thank god

SeaViewBliss · 18/02/2019 19:04

I check on my bank app every 2-3 days for a couple of reasons. Money can be tight so I keep an eye on what we’re spending. Also, we’ve had fraud on our bank card so I like to keep on top of it.

SciFiScream · 18/02/2019 19:07

Check my app daily. Sometimes more if I'm expecting money in or out.
Joint account we keep receipts and then mark them against statement.
Same with credit card.

eurochick · 18/02/2019 19:11

I check the apps most days. When I had paper statements I checked every transaction. It only takes a few minutes.

DelurkingAJ · 18/02/2019 19:15

I only have about four transactions a month that aren’t instantly recognisable DDs...I spend on my credit card for protection against fraud and then pay in full each month. I do eyeball those transactions but I will know what they are as I do rarely spend directly from the account. CC statement I run down for reasonableness each month before paying. There was a fraud and my CC provider stopped it and refunded me.

rosamacrose · 18/02/2019 19:20

I get paid on the last Friday of every month.
All regular payments go out on 1st of every month by direct debit.
Leaves me free to not worry about that, but I check at the beginning of evey month to make sure that all us paid.
Apart from that, because I use a debit card, I check every week, on my online statement, where I stand. More frequently if I've been using it more than usual.
Also have the app for a quick check.

TeenTimesTwo · 18/02/2019 20:01

I get paper statements so I check them when they arrive.
I check I recognise all the transactions, anything unusual I annotate. Same with credit card.

lboogy · 18/02/2019 20:18

I check my account via app every few days, maybe twice a week.

BackforGood · 18/02/2019 20:37

Yes, I always do- probably every 3 weeks or so nowadays.

Nearly 40 years ago, as a school leaver, I worked in a bank. Standing orders were changed manually, using a drawer stuffed with envelopes, each envelopes being stuffed with papers. Back in those days, mortgage rates used to change quite often, and customers would bring in a letter and someone would set up the new amount. There had obviously been a mistake which, with hindsight was waiting to happen and this chap's mortgage was being paid twice every month (been set up as a 'new' rather than 'amended' amount). I still remember to this day being staggered that anyone could have what then seemed like a HUGE sum of money going out of his account 2x a month for months, without noticing!!! Shock

I've always checked transactions since then.

RainbowMum11 · 18/02/2019 22:32

I check my accounts online regularly, always like to know where I am.

BMW6 · 18/02/2019 23:03

I am another who keeps up a detailed spreadsheet of all income and expenditure, and check my account online every few days so I know to the penny what has been spent on which.
Have always done this (before computers I kept a notebook).

It only takes a few minutes if you do it often.

cariadlet · 18/02/2019 23:12

I bank online but print off a bank statement at the end of every month and check every transaction.

If there's anything from amazon, ebay or paypal I go to those websites to check what they are. I check the debit card payments against my receipts.

I do the same with my credit card statement when it comes.
