What's the maximum you'd spend on a hotel?

When I'm planning holidays I try to spend an average of around £50-70 per night for accommodation, obviously a bit more for expensive destinations like NYC. I have splashed out a bit in the past - splashing out for me would be anything over £100-150. I've recently stayed at a few lovely places at this price point and I think that's spoilt me a bit! I'm currently planning our summer holiday in Italy and a lovely hotel has popped onto my radar but it's almost £200 per night. I could afford it but it feels a bit excessive compared to what I usually spend, but then again I don't even know how I came up with my original benchmark to begin with! I just feel most comfortable around the £50-70 mark for some reason.

How much do you usually spend on hotels and what would you consider to be splashing out? I don't have a holiday budget as such (mainly because our tastes are fairly low-key, we don't really do posh restaurants or anything like that) so I suppose that doesn't help - do you set a holiday budget and then allocate hotel spend within that?

We have regular paid between 300-400 per night in some places

One was Marina Bay Sands for DH’s 30th and another was us splashing out on a fancy suite over Hogmanay in Edinburgh.

Luxury safaris in South Africa have cost us £350-400 pn, but that includes food and all activities. The absolute best place I’ve ever stayed was the Oyster Box in Durban which was 400.

Normally I’d limit it to 50-100, going upto 150 for London etc. Our honeymoon was actually one of our cheaper trips - 120 per night in Santorini.

I work in hotels and that is a cheap rate you're thinking about - our "average" would be £160 room only a night week days and higher on weekends for a standard room - that being said loads of hotel pricing changes due to availability and what's going on in the area at the time.

You can also find cheaper rates via online agents like Expedia but PEASE if you do book via an agent/ 3rd party remember you have made a booking with them and not the hotel - therefore any changes/cancellations you want to make you need to go through them and not the hotel - think of it as signing a contract - you wouldn't call vodaphone to make changes to your o2 contact type of idea. I get calls from people every day crying and moaning down the phone to me that they booked via such and such and now want to cancel but the company won't give them a refund, what can I do about it etc - short answer? I can do nothing about it because they didn't book direct.

Booking.com are really good, Expedia are a bit shady when it comes to refunding guests, Itison are good for voucher deals!

I have heard horror stories about using 3rd party booking sites! I'm using a mix of Airbnb and hotels and although I like having a larger place I find the having to check in with a host at an exact time a bit annoying. I love those Airbnbs where you can check in yourself with a lockbox!

It seems I'm probably on the lower end of the spend scale. I might use this thread as ammunition when discussing booking with DH Grin
