Peoples misunderstandings

Yesterday I met up with my grandmother who is 89. We were talking when she suddenly announced she is now vegan. I was surprised as she is a very traditional eater. So I asked her why she had decided to become vegan. She told me she has gone off red meat. But she still likes chicken, gammon and fish fine. An unusual definition of veganism then.

Have you ever some across someone totally misunderstanding an idea or word?

Two spring into mind for me, but I don't think they're as funnz as yours:

  1. When I was 11 and doing PE, one of the assistants was helping me and said I had to do an "athletic stance" but I thought that he said "athletic's dance." Because of this, for the rest of the year, he would tell me to do an athletic's dance.
Second happened last month and if I hadn't stopped it I could have started a rumour. I go to uni in the US and each dorm hall is overseen by an older member of staff known as the "resident director." Our last one resigned at the end of 2018 due to a promotion. Usually, it's customary in that case for the director of another building to step in. I texted my friend when we were chatting over the Christmas holidays and told her that I thought it would be cool if "Ted" (not his real name, the director of the closest building) would take over our building. My friend wrote back that she was really excited because she thought Ted was great. If I hadn't set her straight that I was just speculating, she might have gone and told others false information. It was lucky I did this because Ted did NOT take over the position!
