The right way to layer a trifle?!

I’m trying to pretend I’m not stupidly hungover and model mother and wife and making a trifle for after Sunday dinner...

I have the sponge in the oven, sherry in the cupboard and jelly setting in the fridge but I can’t seem to decide, between all the varying recipes online the right way to layer a trife..

Should I add sherry if there is jelly in it and if so I add this to the sponge or the cream

I have frozen berries should they be added to the jelly or a layer in its own right or leave them out altogether.

Should I add raspberry jam and if so where?!

And Cadbury’s flake all over the top (like my mum used to make) or toasted flakes alongside...

Mumsnet help...my head hurts!!

Don't forget the minced beef, carrots and peas!

SheChoseDown · 17/02/2019 15:10

layer of ladyfingers, a layer of jam, custard (made from scratch), fresh raspberries, more ladyfingers, beef sautéed with peas and onions, a little more custard, sliced bananas and whipped cream.

Trifle

Sponge with sherry.
Fruit
Pour fresh jelly on top - allow to set.
Custard
Cream
Sprinkles

Purists say no jelly at all. It certainly shouldn't be setting separately.

😂

itsboiledeggsagain · 17/02/2019 15:12

I do fresh sponge (generally a day old so it is a little stalker) jelly, berries, custard (not homemade) and whipped cream.

This delish

Boobiliboobiliboo · 17/02/2019 15:12

I’m a bit of a trifle purist. Can’t bear booze or fruit in them. Good jelly, soft sponge, loads of custard, just a little cream and good dark chocolate spirinkles does it for me.

BrieAndChilli · 17/02/2019 15:13

I do slices of Swiss roll around the edge of the bowl, berries in the middle and then jelly poured over so it soaked into the sponge etc. Then a layer of custard and a layer of cream

maslinpan · 17/02/2019 15:14

Jam on the sponge, generous amount of sherry on that as well. Then berries, jelly next (if you have to!), custard, cream, flake on too. Maybe a further layer of nurofen just for you!

AdaColeman · 17/02/2019 15:15

Why is your jelly already setting in the fridge?
If you are going to use jelly, it should be poured in liquid form over the sherry soaked sponge cake.
You haven't even started yet and have already made a basic error! Grin Wine Gin

Trifle sponge with tinned raspberries and sherry
Jelly
Custard
Cream

Atrifleconfused · 17/02/2019 15:16

Hmm

The jelly is setting separately from the fruit, and is defrosting in a bowl on the kitchen worktop...

I was afraid any liquid content from the ice would stop the jelly from setting....now I’m not sure how/where to add it?! 🤔

Also how long does jelly take to set??

My favourite topic. I bloody love trifle.

Mine goes:
Raspberry Swiss roll slices at the bottom and round the bottom edge of trifle dish
Quartered strawberries and whole raspberries
Raspberry jelly (made slightly stronger than usual) to cover fruit and soak into Swiss roll. Leave to set.
Shitloads of homemade custard
Fresh whipped cream
Crumbled up flake

No sherry, ever. Ugh!

I wish I had a trifle for dessert today!

Atrifleconfused · 17/02/2019 15:18

@AdaColeman

Oh dear...

I wasn’t aware

Chocolate cake/broken up brownies at the bottom
Cherries drenched in kirsch or creme de cassis
Custard (thickened slightly with half a sheet of gelatine)
Double cream whipped with a tiny bit of icing sugar added
Chocolate sprinkles on top

BringOnTheScience · 17/02/2019 15:20

How far gone is the jelly?

Quickly give the frozen berries a defrost in the microwave. Assemble sponge & berries quick & pour over the still runny jelly?

insancerre · 17/02/2019 15:20

Soak sponge in sherry
Place sponge in bowl with any fruit
Pour over jelly and allow to set
When set add a layer of custard and allow to set
When set add whipped cream and hundreds and thousands
So it’s 3 layers

youbethemummylion · 17/02/2019 15:21

1.Put the jelly in a bowl

  1. Eat it
All the rest is just a waste of jelly space.
Atrifleconfused · 17/02/2019 15:23

Ok can I rectify that I have already seemed to have fucked it up at the 1st step?! 🤣

My sponge has ridden beautifully though!!

Compost bag
Trifle
Other food scraps so o one sees it

Seriously, I was sure as a child, that people just wiped the crumbs off the counter, dumped booze on it and hid the dirt with whipped cream.
Each ingredient on its own it fine, sometimes in pairs, but not all of them in one dessert

ChippyMinton · 17/02/2019 15:24

It’s fine to let the jelly set a little bit before pouring over the sponge. It stops the sponges from bobbing up and floating.

Atrifleconfused · 17/02/2019 15:25

My sponge is just out of the oven and burning hot, will that effect the jelly setting?

Layer of Swiss roll or weird orange liqueur cake found in Dobbies by Dh. Brandy not sherry, this was discovered upon running out of sherry but we have never had anything else since. Fruit and runny jelly although I'm now veggie and no one has complained since I started throwing 10 cal veggie jelly in instead. Lots and lots of lovely custard. Whipped cream topped with flake crumbles

KickAssAngel · 17/02/2019 15:27

Serve up sponge with jam and whipped cream filling.
Keep jelly for yourself another day.

VasesOfWhiteRoses · 17/02/2019 15:27

Aarrgghh!

I can't believe that no-one has been on the thread to tell you that you don't put jelly in a trifle!

It's sponge soaked in booze (sherry preferably), custard, slightly whipped cream and flaked almonds.

AdaColeman · 17/02/2019 15:28

For a basic family favourite trifle I'd do
Layer of cake/Swiss roll as a base, sprinkled liberally with sherry or fruit liqueur.
Layer of fruit, raspberries are popular here, but lots of options.
Gently pour made up jelly over fruit and cake, (use fruit juice to make up jelly if possible).
Leave to set.
Make custard, pour over set jelly.
Leave to cool.
Decorate with cream, fruit, flaked almonds.
