Would you like this at a winter wedding?

Hello, I'm in the early stages of planning my wedding and thinking about food. As the wedding will probably be in February I want to make sure the food is hearty and warming (and the drinks too).

At the moment I'm thinking of having lots of baked camemberts with veg to dip in as a starter, maybe fish and chips for a main course and a selection of puddings like banoffee pie, lemon meringue pie and others (plus lots of fruit available, things like grapes, figs etc). As well as some bubbly I'd like to offer mulled wine/ cider and maybe hot chocolate too.
Does this sound like too much? Too heavy? Obviously if people are there for a while they will want a decent amount to eat but I don't know whether this would be seen as over the top.
What do you think?

Double dipping dangers noted!! Will have a think about that one Confused

I didn't say anything about double dipping as I thought it might just be me, but yes, it is off putting, I'd do individual portions if I was going to have camembert.

I think roast dinner plus crumble and custard would be a great winter choice and keep most people happy.

BikeRunSki · 17/02/2019 10:48

I don’t eat meat. I’d be a bit fed up at veg chilli at a big celebration meal. It’s such a work-a-day, week day evening meal, what have we got in the fridge ? Type meal. Does n’t shout out “special celebration” at all.

I agree that mulled wine/cider is very Christmassy. Maybe Irish coffees if you want warm alcoholic drinks?

Your menu is very heavy. I’d be fast asleep if I had all that!

@WhiteVixen yes, winter pimms was one of my ideas but is it still a bit too festive? Also I was originally thinking of a January wedding but thought maybe people would be a bit tired and jaded after Christmas and want to lay low. Maybe that's not an issue though!

BikeRunSki · 17/02/2019 10:49

I was assuming individual Camemberts !

cometinmoominvalley · 17/02/2019 10:50

Individual camemberts definitely if we do that. I liked the sharing idea but was probably thinking more intimate dinner party style eating in which case double dippers would be noticed and called out! Shock

The roast idea is nice but I've never had a 'catered' one that wasn't a bit...blah. Potatoes not crispy etc.

One of the loveliest weddings ... at one of the poshest places... had a fish and chip van and it was fab. It did a range (including pie) so problem had a little choice. It felt very novel as we’d had a run of weddings with the usual chicken roast dinner type meals.

Camembert could be logistically tricky unless you do mini ones say in ramekins or cucumber hallows or something.

There will always be someone who a) would prefer a buffet (insert as appropriate) and b) forgets their manners on the day and tells you. Go for you want with big salads and breads so hopefully something for everyone.

Hope you have a great day.

Tiscold · 17/02/2019 10:57

That sounds great but then obviously you have the i hate fish brigade.

Could you do your starter, maybe different pies (have a look at pieminister for suggestions) this could mean you can serve gf and vegan stuff in one pie and then maybe 2 other meaty options like chicken and mushroom and then maybe steak and kidney. Serve it with some mash and some seasonal veg and that would be lovely.
Then your puddings which sound ace.

Evening / late night snack, you could do mini fish and chips as suggested or even just chips on their own would be nice.

However obviously up to you as it's your wedding, and you know your guests and what they like and how fussy they're.
Even if didnt particularly like the food, they could have the buttered bread and the veg at the start for example, most people like chips and could stomach them anyway if they hated the fish, and then i dont know how could anyone hate your puddings Grin

Tiscold · 17/02/2019 11:00

Yes you could also add bowls of like salad and breads for the main as well which will surely please the picky ones.

But again it's your special day and do what makes you happy.

I have to agree though, most roasts are a bit crap tbh, it's the same old same old and you get it at nearly every wedding.

HarrySnotter · 17/02/2019 11:04

I LOVE baked Camembert, it's one of my absolute faves, but I wouldn't touch it at an event with lots of people because of the double dippings as previously mentioned. It's one of those things that I really cannot tolerate.

Agree that crumble for pud a really lovely option.

cometinmoominvalley · 17/02/2019 11:04

@Tiscold yes it's just unexciting isn't it? Reminds me of school dinners slightly.

Thanks for the pieminster suggestion. I think maybe more as a 'later on' option, small ones.

Could possibly do a tagine-style thing for the main with some salads and breads? Obviously a meat and a veggie option still.

I'm thinking now that fish and chips aren't wintery really.

Hollowvictory · 17/02/2019 11:10

Has a caterer given you only these options? As camembert and fish and chips are a bizarre combo

Winegumaddict · 17/02/2019 11:17

I got married in Feb. We did have mulled wine as our welcome drink alongside tea, coffee and fizz . Although it's spring like this year last year we were under snow here until mid March. We had a fish starter it was prawns and smoked salmon I think with a blue cheese and walnut salad alternative for veggies. Main was Beef Wellington, we had one large one per table to serve from with veggies and potatoes etc. Veggie Wellington was our alternative. Pudding was a chocolate torte. In the evening we had a pizza van who cooked large pizzas tk choose slices from.

Meet0nTheledge · 17/02/2019 11:18

I know what you mean about catered roasts being a bit meh, but they do have the advantage that most people like roasts. Whereas quite a lot don't like fish, spicy food, etc.

Hogtini · 17/02/2019 11:18

I wouldn't do camemberts. It's gooey and messy for a wedding. Plus I know a lot of people who can't stand the smell of it, you'll have a room honking of it.
If you're still thinking of cheese what about breaded haloumi fries and dips instead?
Or, French onion soup with gruyere croutons?

BitOfFun · 17/02/2019 11:20

Is it a sit-down meal, or a buffet?

ketchupormayo · 17/02/2019 11:20

Mmmmm sounds perfect

whiskeysourpuss · 17/02/2019 11:21

I'm thinking now that fish and chips aren't wintery really.

I'd agree with this as although I don't eat fish it's something that we'd have after a day at the beach.

I'm honestly not fussy you've just happened to name pretty much everything I don't like 🙈

Wintery comfort food for me are things like stews, casseroles, sausage & mash, shepherds pie etc

BrizzleMint · 17/02/2019 11:23

I'd go for more of a spring menu for February, though what you have said sounds lovely except double dipping

Hollowvictory · 17/02/2019 11:23

Find a fab caterer and see what they suggest. Contact some local wexdi g planners they ale know the best catetersm

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 17/02/2019 11:27

Bear in mind that guests will be wearing posh frocks (probably) and so will you. Curry and chilli can stain!

Fish and chip vans, other food option vans seem to be popular, maybe in the evening. Jacket potatoes with a selection of fillings?

Meet0nTheledge · 17/02/2019 11:27

The little breaded camembert wedges with a bit of chilli jelly and salad are nice.

Foonababoonalagoona · 17/02/2019 11:30

I'd love the fish and chips idea, but you could also offer a chicken and chips for the anti fish? I also love the british desert like spotted dick, crumble with custard. You could offer fruit salad and optional cream for anyone that wanted a lighter choice.

Wellcolourmehappy · 17/02/2019 11:30

I think your menu sounds lovely! Really different to the bog standard wedding menus you see and I think it's just right for February as well - hot and filling!
If any of your guests turn their noses up at your choices then put theirs in a doggy bag and send it to me - I'd be very happy!
