Frequency of children bathing, showering and washing

How old are your children, and how often are their ablutions?

How does that compare with your age and your childhood?

I was born 1980 and were washed in the sink or in front of the living room gas fire til I was about four.

After that it was bath night on a Sunday, both sisters in the same tub. I also remember being sent to wash my hands or wash behind my ears(??) with a flannel before bed.

I don’t think I really had a shower until I was a teenager and staying over at my boyfriend’s house or swimming regularly.

I don’t have children, but my natural nieces/nephews bath once a week (shared bath) and those of my boyfriend shower fail (separate en suites).

In the seventies and early eighties as a child it was a weekly bath and hairwash with a jug. Mid eighties we had a shower fitted over the bath. By then I was in my teens and showered several times a week especially if I was seeing my boyfriend.

My older DC were bathed nightly because that was what the books said. My youngest has been bathed or showered between 1 and 4 times a week depending on what I can fit in although now she showers by herself it’s easier to send her upstairs to do it. Hair washed twice a week (once after swimming). Once puberty hits I’m sure daily showers will be the norm though older DS still battles me on this.

I’m a late 80s baby. Bathed every night when small and showered every morning from around 7+. I’m from a very working class background so I’m not sure it’s always a class thing.

I don't remember how often I had a bath as a child, but I was 8 or 9 when we had a shower fitted. Grandma moved nearer to us so Mum could work full time and save up for one. My 5yo has a bath every other day and a wash morning and night. My mum has never said it's too much or not enough, so it's probably about the same.

I was also born in 1980. Had a bath every day until I was 3 or 4 and then a shower every day. Always in the bathroom, not living room.

My 2 year old has eczema so he has a bath every other day but if his skin improves, I will make it daily.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 17/02/2019 09:48

There was never a shower at my childhood home but it had an amazingly deep enamel bath. I had a bath most night growing up. My Grandparents lived 2 doors down & they did have a shower (because my Grandmother is of the belief baths are filthy Hmm) so I'd occasionally have one there for the novelty. Also most of the houses my Mum lived in had showers so I'd have a shower in the holidays.

My dc range in age from 9-1.5. The 1.5yo is a dirt magnet so gets a quick bath almost every night. The older 4 have either a bath or shower every other night. We have 'Sunday bath night' too, when they all get one, it's usually longer than a week night bath with plenty of time to play. In winter it's usually started at about 3pm.

OP, I'm seriously intrigued by your mother's 'rubber contraception'.

Niffler25 · 17/02/2019 13:54

I can't remember how often when I was a child (born 93) but we did have an electric shower. DS is 7 and has a bath every night. We don't have a shower, we still have the rubber thing that goes on the taps Grin. Although I think they have improved since as mine doesn't pop off or scald me thankfully! There wasn't an electric shower here when we moved in and I'm not 100% decided on moving again so haven't installed one yet.

@SparklingTwilight

I was born in 81.

No-one had showers. Except my wealthier friend who lived in a 5 bee detached.

Everyone else had baths. Showers were "fancy"

My aunt at one point had a shower thing you attached to the taps.

We had abwth maybe twice a week growing up.

Baths in Kitchen sink. I also remember laying in the draining board to get my hair rinsed!

In the sink when we were little

Juanbablo · 17/02/2019 14:00

I was born in 1988 and bathed or showered pretty much every day I think. My children are 11, 8 and 4 and bathe or shower 5 out of 7 days.

GunpowderGelatine · 17/02/2019 14:01

I'm Shock that people and their family members shower twice a day!! Are you not worried about the environmental impact?

HemlockStarglimmer · 17/02/2019 14:53

Born early 1960s. Bath and hair wash once a week. Sometimes less for the hair. Water was heated by immersion heater and ran out pretty quickly.
Had an over bath shower fitted in mid 1970s. This and the introduction of hair conditioner meant much more frequent ablutions.

Nowadays thanks to central heating, a combi boiler, a second loo and fewer people in the house washing happens everyday.

dementedpixie · 17/02/2019 14:59

We never had a shower growing up, just a bath. I remember washing pits and bits at the bathroom sink. My mum is still in the same house and still just has a bath. She has the hose to attach to the bath taps for washing hair. Although she usually washes hair using the mixer tap on the kitchen sink.

awesmum · 17/02/2019 15:48

I was born in '77 we had a shower in our house. When I went to boarding school we only fully bathed once a week which I thought was awful! My kids showered / bath every day, except littlest who had eczema so I don't like to dry her skin out. Teen D showers daily now, other teens- when I physically throw them in there Grin

C1rrus · 17/02/2019 18:30

The scalding/freezing rubber shower hose OF DOOM - we refused, got our hair washed with a big yellow sandcastle bucket.

That's the one. Our alternative was the kitchen measuring jug Grin

Water was heated by immersion heater and ran out pretty quickly.

Yep, and that was an upgrade on the "back boiler".

I was born in 78 and we always had a shower. It was a separate freestanding cubicle. My friends had them too. We were distinctly middle class and not at all rich....

littlemeitslyn · 18/02/2019 13:04

'Reported ' Really???? Idiot

littlemeitslyn · 18/02/2019 13:05

Rubber contraception 😁😁😁😱

Teddy1970 · 18/02/2019 13:12

1970 here...We had a bath once a week on a Sunday night, no showers installed anywhere in the house, and we were not washed more frequently because my parents thought washing was a luxury! My DC wash every other day, sometimes everyday depending on the activities they've been doing.
