What age to watch films?

At what age did you start showing your DC films?

DS is 2 1/2. We visited a friend the other day and her older children were watching Lion King. DS was a bit perturbed when Simba's father was killed and at some of the fight scenes but otherwise seemed to enjoy watching it. Today he is watching Toy Story, but again is finding some scenes scary. DH is of course watching with him and reassuring him that nothing too bad happens and that it works out happy in the end, but it has got me wondering at what age people normally start letting their DC watch children's films.

DD watched from about 2. I remember the exact moment she developed empathy as a result. She went from "haha bye bye bird" when the bird exploded in Shrek to inconsolable sobbing during The Land Before Time.

I really like Studio Ghibli films for smaller children.

My children have been exposed to Monty Python since birth. It's a very serious part of their cultural education 😂

To be honest, my favourite thing to do while I was breastfeeding was watch classic horror films (think Hammer/Hitchcock/Golden age of Hollywood) so mine have kind of always had films around. The good stuff, though! I had to take DS1 to see Beverley Hills Chihuahua once 😱 I took my knitting...

I'm definitely looking forward to introducing him to Studio Ghibli as I love those films myself.

I very rarely watched films as a child myself as we didn't have a TV at home. I don't know whether it was as a result or if I would have been the same anyway but I was a very sensitive child to the extent that I once left watching Winnie the Pooh in tears when Eyore lost his tail.

I don't know if watching films from earlier on would have built some resilience, and whether that would have been a good thing.
