I’m watching Escape to the Country - how do they afford those homes?

Youngish couple, he has kids from a previous relationship, new baby and she’s happy to now give up her career - they’ve got a budget of £900k!

How on earth do people manage that?

FWIW, I think a lot of the hand holding and ‘wife steering’ on these shows is a production team thing, in order to keep everyone in shot for the cameras.

Perhaps the woman should steer the man then.

Someone I know was on this. His wife is a SAHM to 2 kids, he has a good job but he bought a flat in Battersea about 15 years ago, worked abroad for 8-10 years and rented it out so it paid for itself. He probably got a housing allowance when working abroad, as others at his work have Sold the Battersea place at a big profit.

Their budget was 1 million. If you didn't know the above, you'd wonder how they could afford that much.

We want to live on the edge of a village as we intend to play a big part in our new community. However, we don't want to be overlooked, have neighbours or be near a road

This. Clearly they are after a fantasy

Why does Nicky say 'Barksheer' (Berkshire} rather than 'Barksha' like normal folk Because she's from Kentshire grin Is that the real reason?

I have never watched this program, but, I'm pretty normal, and from Kent, and I would say Barksheer (and Lestersheer, and Bucking-um-sheer)... Is this like when I went to Cambrijsheer and called the place spelled Ely eelee and everyone smirked at me?

butteryellow · 18/02/2019 13:17

No! the other way - I said Ee-lie .. eelee's the right way - see how confusing these places are? I like a good kentish name. Like Snodland. Very clear how to pronounce that.

I watched a Location Location Location where they had an 18 year old with a million pound budget.

but they explained why she had that much (she'd got compensation for mistakes made during her birth which left her in a wheelchair).

That was Claire Winship, Phil spoke about that search here
www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/property/11847048/Phil-Spencer-on-his-favourite-house-hunter-and-Britains-best-beach-hut.html

I can remember they went back to see how she was getting on and since buying the flat she'd studied and gained a PhD, met and married and bought a lovely house which had been totally renovated and remodelled to update and cater for her needs. It was really lovely too.
I think she'd kept the flat and rented it out.

My mother live in prime Ettc location.
The house opposite her, a beautiful old Manor House, has recently sold for just shy of £1mil for a couple to use as their weekend home.

Just watching an old episode on Home.
Jules is the presenter. Couple looking for their next but last home, in Cheshire.
They have 1.1 million to spend and want:

4 bedrooms, 2 with en suite
A garden room or conservatory for her plants
At least an acre of garden with a stream
