What can we do to help the people of Venezuela?

It just gets woorse and woorse, can't believe it's still in such a mess :(

Maybe if the Venezuelan armed forces turn against Maduro then that will shift him.
What an absolute tragedy and it will take years to put right.
And yet Jeremy Corbyn still refuses to criticise the regime.

SuzzieWithEthics · 16/02/2019 10:46

But the armed forces aren't turning against him while they are still doing so well with the current arrangement? That's my understanding

OP posts:
Dapplegrey · 16/02/2019 10:49

In that case it will be difficult to shift him.
Having said that, the Berlin Wall seemed there for eternity but then it fell and the GDR collapsed shortly afterwards.

SuzzieWithEthics · 16/02/2019 10:53

I guess eventually their perks will dry up, but that could take years more!

All while more people starve and people die from illnesses that could have been prevented

Op just you and I on this thread. Does no other mumsnetter care about the fate of Venezuela?

Villanellesproudmum · 16/02/2019 16:05

There are various charities taking donations however they are being blocked currently from helping. There was a program about this months ago and it’s not improving at all. Criminal.

SuzzieWithEthics · 17/02/2019 00:07

Yes I've heard about them being blocked but the new acting president is asking for aid. It's difficult to know what we can do to help at all.

@dapplegrey I know, no one cares. If I posted a thread about using 2 inches of someone's drive for a split second to turn around I'd have hundreads telling me I'm an awful human🤦‍♀️

I'm not sure what can be done other than pressuring our government and opposition to take a stance against this. Unfortunately they are totally absorbed by Brexit.

SilverySurfer · 17/02/2019 07:15

The current Venezuelan crisis is a perfect example of the economic ineptitude of socialists in government. Maduro should stand down if he wants what is best for the country but I'm guessing he won't as he wants what is best for him.

Tidythatmess · 17/02/2019 07:47

Im shocked that the plight of the people hasn't been in the news more. Babies are starving due to lack of milk, its horrendous. I've only just realised how bad it is, going to read up more now. What can be done if aid is being physically blocked from entering the country? Sad

SuzzieWithEthics · 17/02/2019 07:47

If they hand not of been so reliant on oil, not borrowed so much and reduced spending things might have been ok. But the leaders have been utterly awful.

Tidythatmess · 17/02/2019 07:49

Villanelle will that aid reach the people? I'd donate via that link if it will help.

Twizzleegg · 17/02/2019 07:54

I care, but I don't know what we can do. It's not socialism when some are more equal than others. Venezuela has incredible natural reserved which have been completely mismanaged. 😐

MillytantForceit · 17/02/2019 08:36

Socialist my arse.

Just another Caudillo in an outsized uniform from all the big dinners while his people starve.

The army will mutiny when he can no longer pay them.

Villanellesproudmum · 19/02/2019 16:29

The aid is getting to those who manage to cross the borders into camps.

Charley50 · 19/02/2019 17:26

It's a really tragic situation and have watched a few programmes on it. Hard to know what to do or say tbh.

Dapplegrey · 22/02/2019 09:48

Apparently Maduro is now closing the Brazilian border.
What does everyone think about Richard Branson’s concert? I admire him for actually doing something.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 22/02/2019 11:39

I don't know it's heart breaking.
They won't let aid through.
Unfortunately the people in Venezuela are a touchy subject, because from the comfort of their lovely homes they support the politics of the regime that's done this..
and are an embarrassment to many Mumsnetters and they are too busy on threads about terrorist begums fate in Syria..

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 22/02/2019 11:47

While most aid has been blocked, the Red Cross has been allowed to provide some health care so I would donate there if you want to help. And if the project is limited/fully funded at least your donation will go to help a similar humanitarian health crisis.

Dapplegrey · 24/02/2019 09:21

Maduro is now burning or confiscating lorries full of aid.

Buds i dear this is true. Pages and pages on here about the human rights of Begum and a handful of posts about the human rights of the population of Venezuela.

Charley50 · 24/02/2019 10:44

@Dapplegrey - people in the UK give millions to charities; including the Red Cross. What are you talking about? What do you think 'mumsnetters' should be saying?

Venezuela is a terrible situation. It's also a country which is far away, and doesn't have any links to the UK in terms of culture, politics etc.

Roxyxoxo · 24/02/2019 10:50

People are more concerned about whether there might be some food shortages for a few weeks after Brexit Hmm

SuzzieWithEthics · 24/02/2019 10:53

99.99% of mumsnet people don't give a fuck about Venezuela.

I haven't given to aid yet as thought it might just be wasted.

Problem is there are some vested interests in the oil.

Uptheapplesandpears · 24/02/2019 11:06

Yes, heaven forbid people are concerned about still being able to eat in the event of a process which, if nothing is done to prevent it, is certainly going to cause disruption to food supplies in a country that's nowhere near self sufficient. How very selfish. And really, Shamina Begum's citizenship is something that's literally within the sole control of the UK, unlike the Venezuelan situation. The decision to withdraw it has been made as a sop to public opinion and so for those who are concerned about her welfare, and I must admit it's not top of my priority list, it makes perfect sense to make a fuss about it. If the government didn't think it would benefit them politically then the decision wouldn't have been made.

In terms of Venezuela, I follow a Swedish journalist on Twitter called Annika Rothstein. Shes out there now and was assaulted yesterday by state forces for trying to report on the aid lorries attempting to enter. Harrowing.

The only charity I know of helping is the Red Cross and I'd sworn not to donate to them again after reading about the sexual abuses... may have to hold my nose and rethink.
