Please help, struggling to breastfeed as can't eat

I have an older baby who was EBF, now on three solid meals a day too but still breastfeeding as primary hydration (we offer water too but she's not that interested). She's never had a bottle so not used to it.

I have terrible tonsillitis, I'm sorry to be a drama llama but I'm really struggling to eat, I've lost a lot of weight recently anyway and it feels like my supply has given up. I know we're told that doesn't happen during illness but her nappies are significantly lighter although I can tell there's a bit of wee there

What can I do to help supply? I'm in so much pain and feel sick with diarrhoea too. My tonsils have the white spots but I had thought it was viral as DD and I have just got over a nasty virus too (not sure what but we both had fevers etc)

I may call 111 but not sure they can help. Is lucozade any good?!

Also have terrible earache, does that indicate bacterial?

Are you definitely drinking enough - I've found dehydration hits my supply badly? It might be worth trying diarolyte if you are dehydrated. For something that's easy to drink and has some calories, have you tried honey with lemon? I can't stand lucozade but it would be worth a go if you can.

Afraid I know nothing about tonsilitisin adults but given how bad you sound calling 111 sounds like a sensible plan.

Focus on keeping yourself hydrated, and get an out of hours appointment - it sounds likely you need antibiotics. If you’ve been end for a while your supply should come back especially if you keep hydrated - keep putting her to the breast to keep the hormones flowing.

How old is she?

RebeccaCloud9 · 16/02/2019 07:12

I'm sure this isn't the best medical advice but I'd drink coke or similar, or yep Lucozade. You need lots of liquid and energy fast. That should perk you up a bit.

Jackyjill6 · 16/02/2019 07:22

Will your baby drink from a cup? Try milk if she won't take water.

Cantchooseaname · 16/02/2019 07:29

Anything that hydrates you- whatever you fancy. Isotonic drinks- great if you can do them.
What about an ice lolly? Or ice cubes.
Sounds grim.
However, maybe an opportunity for your partner to push the cup agenda with LO- water/ milk/ formula, couple different cups, see how it goes? May take pressure off you a little to let you recover.

I think you need to see a doctor. Tyrozets are good if someone could go and get you some asap. How old is your baby? Give her plenty of fruits and high water foods, cucumber etc (depending get on age obviously ).

crosspelican · 16/02/2019 07:32

Go to the doctor for your throat, and get someone to pick up some sippy cups for baby.

If she needs hydration from another source she is old enough that you don't need bottles (and she won't like them anyway) but sippy cups are very interesting at that age, so she might go for it!

Earthmoon · 16/02/2019 07:36

Lucozade changed their recipe and it doesn’t have the sugar it used to have. Try a sugary hot cup of tea for energy

Footle · 16/02/2019 09:11

Old Jamaica ginger ale/beer still has a sugar version

Thank you for these replies

@BertrandAllen she's nine months so I might be overworrying but although she eats a good quantity and variety of solids she still takes loads of milk day and night. We're obviously really established now so I don't get engorged but I can feel that she's getting plenty normally. Last couple of days she's been noticeably struggling but gamely sucking away

DH has been great and bought be Lucozade and Tyrozets after discussing milk which the pharmacist (I'm especially cautious with DD as due to congenital problems she needs more procedures than I'd like and I'd rather be ill for longer than increase her exposure except that I'm no use to her at all like this)

To be honest though the lozenge hasn't even touched the side of the pain so I will give it a bit longer and then think about 111 if I can manage to get to OOO (I know I'm posting on mumsnet but flat on my side and can't sleep from the ear pain)

How dramatic! We have family who are genuinely seriously ill so I feel ridiculous

You need to look after yourself. Your baby will be fine. Make sure she has high water content fruit like watermelon. Keep offering her water in a cup. And get yourself to the doctor.
