What should I have in my home first aid medicine kit?

I dont currently have one and have just realised I don’t even have a plaster in the house except for blister plasters Blush

I’m a grown up now with a 5 year old DS and think it’s about time I got some sort of first aid kit/medicine cabinet sorted.

I’ve got carpool and expired allergy medicine and that’s pretty much it.

So I’m just wondering what everyone else has as standard at home so they are prepared.

As above especially anti histamine, good call on tic removal tool I always put surgical spirit on the tic wound.

Ice packs and cling film-brilliant for covering large burns or grazes.

Here's the answer from the experts....

Personally I don't stock all of this now as I kept throwing some away unused but would nip and get it. We are close to shops though.

Pop some burn gel in- it is fabulous at treating nettle stings!

Throat sweets are good

A glycerine cough syrup

Gauze / big sticky wound plasters are great

Micropore tape

Drawing ointment - forget the actual name of it but great for splinters- it's like a paste

Vaseline

Alka selza/ berroca for the grown ups

I’ve just added plasters, antiseptic wipes, wound pads, steri strips, bandage, germoline, bite cream, antihistamines and Imodium to my shopping list.

I have calpol, adult painkillers, blister plasters, safety pins, lemsip, thermometer that I’ve rounded up from round the house!

That’ll do for starters I think!

Thanks all!

If you are in the countryside add in a tick twizzler

macnab · 14/02/2019 19:19

Burn gel is a must. And arnica cream which is brilliant at reducing bruising.

AngelaStorm73 · 14/02/2019 19:47

Insect bite repellent and cream
I keep my nit comb in there (thankfully we've never had them!)
Cotton wool
A pair of tweezers (for splinters etc.)
Arnica
Rescue remedy
Medicines like antihistamine in children's doses (liquid usually) not just adults
Day nurse/night nurse
Lemsip
Throat sweets
Cough syrup
Antiseptic cream
Alcohol wipes
Dressings as well as plasters
Cooling gel, heat gel, nurofen gel

VanillaSauce · 14/02/2019 21:09

Burn gel is a must. It's the only thing that couldn't be substituted by anything else. Plasters you can fudge it with tissue and duct tape. Painkillers/Calpol/lemsip can be found everywhere but ice packs and cold compress doesn't cut it when it comes to burns.
