Bloody Neighbours!! Washing ruined!

Arrgh! Waited weeks for nice enough weather to be able to wash some king size duvet covers and hang them out knowing they would actually dry by the end of the afternoon. We live in a tiny house with no room for a tumble dryer (or a dishwasher, which is more annoying) and no room to dry them indoors. Garden is the size of a pocket handkerchief. In winter we have to use a launderette half an hours drive away. Neighbours know all this.

So got them all out at 9am, then put a load of other clothes out a couple of hours later. Had some lunch, then glanced out of the window to see the garden (where the washing was hanging) full of thick smoke. Dashed out and find the neighbours are burning garden waste a few metres away which is blowing straight onto my washing, which now stinks and is covered in ash. Angry They have loads more garden than us and could have had their fire in another area or not bloody started one at all and put in all in the green bin instead. Angry Angry

They were out there and I called over that the smoke was going on my washing and that it was covered in ash. She looked up, said 'Oh sorry' and that was it. They just carried on piling green waste onto the fire so more smoke was billowing up and across. I was desperately trying to get it all down and back inside (still damp) but the damage was done. It's hanging inside now but it stinks so I'm going have to bloody wash it again. I mean, just why?!? We've always been friendly enough. They have form for being CF's though so I shouldn't be that surprised. Just wanted to vent though, what a waste of time on my one free day!

That is so inconsiderate of them - how frustrating! :(

BaronessBomburst · 14/02/2019 14:52

Do they have a tumble dryer........?
Ask them if you could pop it in as you now don't have dry bedding for tonight.

INeedNewShoes · 14/02/2019 14:53

Oh God that's just absolutely exasperating.

I have to deal with similar here in that my next door neighbour uses a chimenea to burn garden waste which he does nearly every day in summer Angry

Singlenotsingle · 14/02/2019 14:57

Ask them if the could give your stuff a rinse and dry. They might tell you to f-off though!

SpanielEars070 · 14/02/2019 14:57

Report to your local council, preferably sending them a photo.

Ours are very good, I've reported one neighbour 3 times.... they have a gardener who lit a fire every Tuesday. I went absolutely batshit one afternoon when we had visitors and were all sat in the garden.

They will be either visited or sent a letter. There are laws to protect you from smoke inhalation, and bonfires aren't allowed after 6pm or any other such rubbish often spouted.

PuffinTilly · 14/02/2019 14:58

Baroness yes they do - we were chatting outside a few months ago when I was hanging the washing out and and I was saying we didn't have one as no room ans she said they did. Too pissed off to ask at the moment but it's a good idea! I made it pretty clear how fed up I was by unpegging everything very crossly! Grin

NewShoes how infuriating! Why are people so selfish?!

My neighbour's set fire to his garden and the neighbour's garden too didn't stop him from having more bonfires

PuffinTilly · 14/02/2019 15:04

Spaniel that's a possibility but it is the first time they've done it (so far) so not much to go on yet.

They are really annoying at times though. They put their plastic recycling out one time and the box blew over, spreading unwashed plastic waste across the area, including into the stream that runs past our houses and into another neighbours garden. And then just left it. Eventually I saw the bloke and told him about it and he went round picking it up. Not he didn't already know about it, just couldn't be arsed until someone said something

There are no laws against having a bonfire, but there are laws for the nuisance they can cause -however they would have to be having pretty big and regular bonfires for it to be classed as a nuisance. So no, the council won't do anything at this point.

We've had this OP and yes, it's absolutely infuriating.

There was a period last summer, when one of our neighbours seemed to be having constant bonfires. I was so angry, I can't tell you! It would be a perfect sunny, windy day, ideal for drying and then I'd hear that initial crackle, followed by a plume of smoke which continued for most of the day, blowing straight into our garden Angry

The problem with making an official complaint is that it's then logged, so if and when you move, you'll need to declare it.

I HATE inconsiderate neighbours! Hate.
