Any dentists about? My front teeth are moving!

I’ve always had a gap between my front teeth. I quite like it - or at least, I have made my peace with it over the years. But over the last month or so, it seems to be closing up, especially towards the bottom, leaving me with a weird gap that’s wider at the top. I’ve noticed my front teeth also ache a bit.

I will go to the dentist when I find time (very busy work and long commute) but in the meantime, any ideas what is going on? I assume it isn’t urgent - but as my teeth haven’t moved for the last 25 years or so, I’m a bit perturbed.

I'm not a dentist but had a stint of orthodontist work. I noticed my teeth moving closer together and basically started overcrowding over time which pushed me to get the braces I knew I needed.
Orthodontist told me teeth will move as you age generally. Not sure if there is any underlying things that could cause teeth movement but someone will come along and clarify.

I learnt after my eldest child had braces that teeth move all the time and continue to move!! DC has to wear a retainer at night to keep their teeth in the place they are supposed to be and DC says that, if its not worn they can feel the teeth moving!

It was a real eye opener for me as I just assumed that the teeth grew out of the jawbone and stayed where they grew! I guess that, as we get older, our bones become less strong and stable so this must include the jawbone which might be why your teeth are moving more?

Thanks for the replies! I think I did know teeth carried on moving over time, but this seems so sudden - no perceptible movement for decades and then my gap has almost closed in just a few weeks! I think that’s why it is disturbing me.

Also the fact it’s not closing evenly, I guess

My front tooth has been moving for the past 15 years on and off and aches a little when it’s on the move. My dentist did an X-ray and for some reason the bone underneath this tooth is loosing density. Age I guess! My dentist put a splint across the back of this tooth to join it to the stable one next to it to put a stop to it. Probably worth a mention to your dentist on your next visit.

Could it be that your wisdom teeth are on the move below the surface?

Catabogus · 14/02/2019 17:10

I haven’t got any wisdom teeth - they’ve all been removed. Good thinking though!

There’s a possibility of gum disease
The plaque dissolves the bone that holds the teeth in place - it’s a very long slow largely painless process
Less bone means the teeth are more susceptible to being pushed into another position by the forces of your jaw muscles during eating talking or grinding
You Definitely need to get looked at sooner rather than later

Catabogus · 14/02/2019 19:14

Oh that’s scary. OK, I will make an appointment!

Happened to me while I was pregnant with my son. It was gum disease. It’s now under control and my teeth aren’t doing the Hokey Cokey any longer! Make an appointment :)

My back tooth moves because there's space next to it - see a dentist though to make sure

AngelaStorm73 · 14/02/2019 19:21

Mine did this because of bruxism (tooth grinding) you may need a mouth guard if so

Babyroobs · 14/02/2019 19:21

I feel like my teeth are moving , one of my front teeth is definitely sticking out more than it ever was. I mentioned it to my dentist this week and she said it can happen usually if gum disease is present.

ValleyoftheHorses · 14/02/2019 19:23

This isn’t the sort of thing that can be diagnosed over the Internet. Sorry. Please giro the dentist

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 14/02/2019 20:56

Last time mine changed position it was to make way for the extra molar that came through the roof of my mouth. Best get an x ray and see what's going on beneath the surface.
