Excessive weight loss after pregnancy/breastfeeding

This isn't a stealth boast and I'm not complaining exactly but am a bit worried

I was 9st6 when weighed at 12 weeks, put on quite a lot in pregnancy and was 11 stone something a few weeks after birth

Nine months on I'm now 8st6 and still dropping which puts my BMI in healthy range but right at the low end. I'm not dieting and only dog walking in terms of exercise but DD is still drinking as much milk as ever (including night feeds) despite eating plenty of solids now.

Is this normal? I was told she might have CMPA so don't eat dairy myself now although she has small amounts in her solids on dr advice as we're trying to establish if she's outgrown it now. Otherwise though I do think I eat a reasonable amount. It is mostly healthy food though - lots of vegetables, whole grains etc so maybe I'm just not getting enough overall? Do eat half an avocado nearly everyday though and nuts!

If I went to GP what would they usually check for?

Last bump and then I'll accept it's just me! 😊

Breastfeeding definitely burns calories but it sounds like you’re burning a lot more than you’re taking it, or there’s something else going on.

I’d use a calorie tracker like eg My Fitness Pal to gauge how much you’re actually eating. That’ll work out whether you’re eating enough or not based on your calorific needs. No point seeing a doctor until you’re sure this isn’t the issue. If it isn’t then it could be a thyroid thing: they’re quite common post pregnancy...

I think you need cake! And (some) wine.

My daughter also has cmpa. I thought it would help me lose a bit of weight but I discovered.... bourbons and Oreos are dairy free! That ruined it! I also like to bake so when I was stressed would bake df cakes and scoff them.

If your baby is feeding a lot and you're walking a dog and eating healthily then that's probably why you're still losing weight. Maybe start tracking using my fitness pal so you actually see how many calories are going in vs going out. Make some swaps eg banana instead of an apple. Doesn't meant you have to have a 'bad' diet.

Perhaps get your thyroid checked?

It could be breast feeding but it might be worth seeing your GP to get your thyroid checked.

I was 8.5 stone before my first pregnancy, and 6 months after the baby was born I was 7.5 stone! I was told to eat more cake. If you're active and busy, and breastfeeding, you might find you just need more calories.

You lucky cah. Grin

But yes OP, definitely worth popping to the GP for a chat, that's quite extreme.

I think the dairy free really co tributes to it for some.

With my now 4 yr old I put on 3.5 stone in pg taking me to 12.5 stone.
Lost 1.5 in 1st few weeks, a but later got to about 10.5 and stayed there till I joined slimming world when LO was 2.5 and got down to 8.5st

This time I put on 4st, so back up to 12.5st.
Lost 2.5 st in 1st 5 weeks due to severe sleep deprivation a d really poor appetite(basically force feeding myself).
This then settled, but I've been totally dairy and soy free for about 7 weeks a d mil, cheese and butter free for 3 weeks prior to that.

Despite eating my weight in crumpets, toast, bourbon biscuits and mint thins, I am still losing weight.
It has slowed down but I'm now just a little over 9st at 4 months pp.

I had my thyroid etc checked a while ago and its fine, but definitely worth getting yours checked!

I haven’t weighed myself but ino I have lost quite abit of weight. I’ve been breastfeeding for 3 years in total now. I was a size 10/12 before I was pregnant didn’t put too much weight on. Fell pregnant again year after dd was born and continued to breastfeed I am now feeding a 3 year old and 15 month and I’m the smallest I have ever been a size 8 now and I’m finding some jeans in this size baggy. I think I could do with toning up as would improve my appearance.

I dropped about half a stone less than I was pre-pregnancy due to breastfeeding, always being on the go and realistically not eating enough. Baby always came first so I ended up neglected

WTFdidwedo · 14/02/2019 20:03

I'm the same and dairy free. I've just started introducing it back to my first before trying my daughter with it but am still not putting weight on. I'm a bit gutted actually as I've lost my bum! Sad although I am using it as an excuse to eat even more crap than usual.
