Coeliacs - do you avoid coffee shops that serve oat milk?

Noticed today that Cafe Nero have also started offering oat milk. I've avoided Starbucks since they started offering it last year due to the cross contamination risks.

Do others avoid drinking milk based drinks in coffee shops that sell oat milk? Has anyone had a bad reaction since places started offering oat milk?

I'm not a coeliac but two members of my family are; they are both heavy coffee shop users and have never had a problem with chains that also sell oat milk although they are both generally quite careful. I'm not sure it would have occurred to either of them to be honest.

Im presuming the oat milk is gluten free as oats are - I'd be more worried about the toast/pastries tbh

I avoided starbucks when they started offering oat milk as it just seemed easier to go somewhere else.

Now it seems more places are offering oat milk I'm wondering whether it's something I need to be aware of. Logically i think the amount of gluten in oat milk (i don't react to oats themselves) is a trace amount anyway, then the amount that could possibly be left on a steam nozzle is a tiny amount of an already tiny amount.

The oat milk isn't gluten free, most oats aren't gluten free either unless labelled as such.

I avoid. I just don’t think the risk is worth it. The consequences of continually being exposed to even tiny amounts of gluten are huge.

You’ll also know that we don’t have to be having symptoms to be being harmed by our gluten exposure.

Not worth it IMO, but your body, your choice.

I don’t worry about it as I assume they’ll be using separate jugs etc/ wiping down as a good proportion of the oat milk drinkers will be allergic to dairy. Possibly I’m wrong though. I’m a very infrequent visitor to coffee shops and usually have tea anyway. I may stop having my occasional coconut milk lattes though, as it’s only just occurred to me that if there are separate jugs that’s probably going in the oat milk ones....

I hadn't thought of this, although I didn't know Starbucks is using Oatmilk.
I'll ask when I go in, I use Costa more often as they have little gluten free mini bakewells.
If they are using different milk jugs and washing down the steamer I think we should be OK, same for milk allergy I suppose, they wouldn't use a jug that had previously had milk in for them and would clean the steam thing.

I think anyone with a serious milk allergy would avoid Starbucks due to the cross contamination risk. None of the coffee shops guarantee any of the things made on premises as allergen free. I've always assumed the dairy alternatives are aimed at vegans and those with dairy intolerance.

Not sure how long Nero have been offering oat milk, only noticed yesterday but have been drinking lattes there for months
