Would you eat these?

I tend to really hate these kind of threads, as I usually want to shout “just eat the bloody thing!” but today I find myself seeking help!

I’m usually pretty free and easy around use by dates, don’t worry too much if something has gone over by a day or two, etc. But for some reason, a pack of cherry scones I got in the reduced section for 20p is giving me angst!

I froze them on the day I bought them (about a week or two ago), and this evening have gone to take one out to defrost and eat later. Except I’ve just seen on the label it says “Previously frozen and defrosted. Do not freeze”. Booo!!

Would you eat them? While I do take some minor risks with fridge/cupboard stuff, I am always careful to follow rules around not re-freezing previously frozen meat, etc. But I reeeally wanted a cherry scone this evening!!

Yes, scones I would, actually fancy one now!

INeedNewShoes · 13/02/2019 20:19

With something like a scone I'd risk it

Don’t come running to us when you’re immobilised by Scone’s disease.

they will probably be as dry as old bones but other than that there's no reason not to eat them

I am always finding myself reading cooking instructions on the back of packets for how to cook from frozen to find that either a) it should not have been frozen or b) it should be thoroughly defrosted before going into the oven

SconNotScone · 13/02/2019 20:28

Rogue, I am not one to complain when i’m ill (ahem, cough!) so fear not.

Shall I take this as a unanimous “fuck it, just eat it”?

I can be a bit of a hypo-scone-driac sometimes, so I might be back to give a tale of woe later!

MsMighty, I think I might microwave it a bit, perhaps help with the dryness issue.

I'm not sure I understand why you're considering not eating them? Why wouldn't you? Just because it says don't freeze doesn't mean you can't freeze them. You can do what you like.

SconNotScone · 13/02/2019 20:40

betty, I guess it is because I have always heard that refreezing previously frozen stuff is bad in terms of bacteria growth. Not sure why this bothers me more than use by dates etc, but it just has done!

Anyway, I have done what I really wanted, (not so) deep down, and have just eaten one!

Would definitely eat. I want a scone now

iloveredwine · 13/02/2019 21:02

eat it!!!!

SconNotScone · 13/02/2019 21:12

Eaten and enjoyed! Have given one to my husband as well, if I’m going down, I’m taking him with me.

I definitely would. In fact I frequently do with Aldi brioche burger buns. Never even noticed it until my friend pointed out that it said on the pack not to freeze. I always take them straight from the freezer and pop under the grill.

I haven't killed anyone yet! Grin

Jamhandprints · 13/02/2019 23:00

Scones are not that dangerous.

GroggyLegs · 13/02/2019 23:00

Scones sit out at ambient temperatures for days & days and the worst that happens is they go mouldy.

Freezing them will have stopped any bacterial and mould growth.

They will be fine.

BarbaraofSevillle · 14/02/2019 07:59

I refreeze raw meat even chicken if I defrost it and change my mind about cooking it, and it has always been fine, so I can't see a problem with scones.

I would be as certain as I could be that your scones would be safe to eat. However, prepackaged scones are rarely very nice, so for that reason, I probably wouldn't eat them. The only scones I have ever enjoyed have been freshly baked and usually home made, although Morrisons 'The Best' ones are not too bad.

INeedNewShoes · 14/02/2019 11:26

M&S scones, sold individually in the bakery bit are really good, but otherwise I'm with you Barbara that bought scones are just not worth it. However, I am far from being in the same mindset re freezing defrosted meat Shock

Anyway, that's all off topic... OP are you still alive?

SconNotScone · 14/02/2019 15:04

Alive and thriving, thanks to my cherry scone!

I do tend to agree actually that pre-packaged scones aren’t usually that great. These were Tesco finest cherry scones, and they were pretty decent to be fair!
