High platelet count

I am pregnant and have had a letter back to say my platelet count is high after a recent blood count.

Is this common and does anybody know what it means?

Depends on the level they feel is 'high'. Platelets should run between 150-450k. Have you been told what the platelet count is? Are you being asked to go back to the GP?

Mine were the other way, too low, and have stayed that way for the subsequent 23 years since giving birth!

@scaryteacher thanks for replying, it says my platelet count is 456? I'm guessing this must be out of the normal range if it's been noticed.

It doesn't say anything, just to return for a blood test in 2-4 weeks.

I don't even know what it means, I've had a google and really scared myself!

A normal platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. Having more than 450,000 platelets is a condition called thrombocytosis; having less than 150,000 is known as thrombocytopenia. You get your platelet number from a routine blood test called a complete blood count (CBC). www.hopkinsmedicine.org/heart_vascular_institute/clinical_services/centers_excellence/womens_cardiovascular_health_center/patient_information/health_topics/platelets.html

You are slightly over by 6. I wouldn't be too worried, but then I've had a count of 19k, so well under the limits. If there were huge amounts of concern, they'd have you back quicker. Your platelet count fluctuates on a daily basis, so when I've been sent to A&E for a count of 19k, by the time I've had the next blood test, they are up to 35k. Don't scare yourself silly either! If there is a range between which the platelet count is considered 'normal', then some will be high and some low.

Meant to add, they take all the 000s off the end, so 456 = 456,000. my lowest count has been 19, so 19,000. Some use the 456, some will put 456k.

@amrscot I had high platelets in my first pregnancy - I was prescribed low dose aspirin and given sexy compression stockings towards the end. It increases the risk of blood clots so be extra aware of hot patches on your legs etc in case of thrombosis. I had a clot following labour which they drained in surgery but no one ever really said if that was due to platelets or just one of those things.

My platelets are higher this time around again - 458 or something first so they took more blood the week after in case it was due to dehydration. Came down to 438 which is still high (midwife said up to 400 is normal) but better. Saw a consultant the other week and she completely brushed it off - they worry about low platelets as it can mean you lose a lot of blood easily but high seems to be of little concern.
