Hi my DH is losing his sight (macular degeneration). We have had a look online but not finding anything that can offer him free audio books. He has an android phone. Can anyone point us in the right direction to search. Thanks.

Have you checked your local library service? Many of them now offer free eBooks and downloadable audio books.

switchedtooverload · 13/02/2019 01:22

Yes my library uses borrowbox. Its great.

gemmaxyz · 13/02/2019 02:09

Overdrive is better than Borrowbox, but if you can't easily get to any libraries with Overdrive to join them (and you can join multiple library services) you may want to try Listening Books which you can join from anywhere in the country if you have a health condition where audiobooks are a helpful format: listening-books.org.uk/
it is £20 a year, which is cheaper than Audible or other monthly subscription services.

The RNIB also have an Overdrive service for audiobooks, which has to be worth contacting in your circumastances: www.rnib.org.uk/talking-books-digital-download

Librivox has free recordings of public domain books, read by volunteers: librivox.org/
The quality may not always be as good as the best professional actors, but some are decent.

The cheapest of the monthly subscription services seems to be Scribd, which is $8.99 for unlimited borrowing. (Not per book like Audible.) They also do ebooks, which you need to read on a tablet or phone. Their ebooks don't go onto Kindles.

Librivox, but some of the readers drive me mad. There seems to be a prolific nasal, sarcastic sounding american guy. Still worth a look.

I also use Audible, I pay a small amount (£3 a month I think) and get a free book once a month with that, as well as the free stuff on there. These are really well read official versions.

Also plenty to be found on spotify, as well as really good podcasts.

gemmaxyz · 13/02/2019 08:41

Patroclus, how are you getting Audible for £3 a month? Did you join a long time ago and never interrupt your membership?
Now it is £7.99 a month and that just gets one credit.

GloriousGoosebumps · 13/02/2019 08:50

YouTube also have full length audio books.

My library does free audio books. You download the free app (RM DIGITAL) and log in with your library number.

The audiobook selection isn't great but so far I've requested 2 new audiobooks and they become available within a week.

I requested the first Game of Thrones book and it instantly became reserved for weeks and I've since noticed that they have now bought the whole series. I don't think other people realise that they can request new audiobook titles.

MrsTommyBanks · 13/02/2019 10:20

I'll second Youtube. There are loads of excellent audio books on there.

Patroclus · 13/02/2019 12:50

gemmaxyz yes I joined soooo long ago when there was barely anything on there, then forgot about it. When I got back to it I had about 2 years of credits to use and there was stuff worth downloading.

Try scribd I think it’s £8 per month for unlimited books/aufiobooks

AbsolCatly · 13/02/2019 19:21

Have a look at listening-books.org.uk, not free but an inexpensive subscription with no limits on the amount books you borrow
