Anxious 7 year old DD

Dd has recently started to struggle with anxiety. I think this partly comes from some of the topics at school.
Last summer she worried herself sick (physically) on the Ferry just after they had studied the Titanic.

They are now doing an extreme earth topic and she is really anxious and having nightmares about Tsunamis and Tornadoes.

I'm considering asking for a more upbeat topic for next term.

Has anyone experienced similar.

Just to add that she is not generally an overly sensitive child.

Can you talk to her about it? Eg Explain the reason so many died on the Titanic was because they hadn’t didn’t have enough lifeboats. As a result there is now a law that boats have to have enough lifeboats etc.

We did explain that it was a long time ago and these days everything is so very safe.

I do think some topics are introduced too early for some young ones to process, and be able to put them into historical context. My dd had nightmares about fires when they did The Great Fire of London when she was 5.

I’ve just taught volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis to Year 3.
Every child loved it, and we studied in depth where these events are most likely to happen. Can you focus on that with her - it is extremely unlikely in the UK.

And don’t ask the school to change the next topic, teachers do a yearly plan over the summer, trips, resources, books, planning is all done around that yearly plan so a lot of things are likely to be in place.

Focus on talking your DD through her fears etc
