Any experience of refurbing a kitchen by just changing doors

Does it look like a new kitchen or just an old kitchen with new doors?

There's nothing wrong with the cupboard carcasses, the floor, the sink, or the granite worktop but the door fronts are starting to look shabby, plus I'd like some minor layout changes and a complete change of style.

Is this possible without starting from scratch? What happens about matching the colour of the carcasses to the doors, especially on the ends?

Following as this is what we are going to do- we are also replacing worktop and sink though. It's all piled up in our living room waiting for a kitchen fitter! Hopinģ we've not made a mistake, but it's the only way we can afford a newish kitchen.

TearingUpMyHeart · 12/02/2019 21:26

We did ours with a local joiner. Looked great. They also do the cupboard ends, plinths etc so it all matches.

My parents did this as dad fits kitchens! Most kitchens are sold as separate bits anyway

Yes we had this done and was very happy with it. Had new sink and worktops but just replaced the doors and handles. The carcasses were still ok with no damage. The fitters also added new large pan drawers in the bottom of our boiler cupboard. They put up an matching end panel to cover any side panels. It looked like a new kitchen even though the tiles remained the same. It was about the third of the price of a new kitchen and a lot less hassle!

I'd like do do this too. What kind of cost did people come out with?

Puppylucky · 12/02/2019 21:30

Just having this done at the moment with Kitchen Magic. The answer is that it looks like an entirely new kitchen as they don't just replace doors they do plinths kick boards and side panels as well as worktops. They will also replace sinks and appliances if required. Two days in we are half way through and it looks like a completely different kitchen Grin

Puppylucky · 12/02/2019 21:32

Cost wise we paid 8k all in (ie including fitting) for 20 odd new fronts plus worktop and new sink - about half the price of a new kitchen

TearingUpMyHeart · 12/02/2019 21:35

I think ours was about 2.5k for about 10 new fronts, new worktop, plinths etc and fitting was about £500. It was about 5 years ago, and a small kitchen really.

Bestseller · 12/02/2019 21:51

Kazzymac, I think that's the biggest appeal, that it might be less hassle. Plus the granite worktops are really far too good to scrap

@bestseller
It was a lot less hassle and done in two days!
We actually made quite a few changes and it's made a huge difference as it felt like new rather than a cheap compromise.
We used an independent company based in Essex - would recommend if you are nearby?

Bestseller · 12/02/2019 21:58

Oh, oh,oh yes please!

I did this. £1.8k for 14 new doors, 3 new drawer fronts, three ends, handles, worktops, plinths, sink and tap. Cost about £1k to fit. Looks like a brand new kitchen and I didn’t need to empty the cupboards/drawers for them to do the work. It’s what i’ll do next time I need a new kitchen, so cheap and easy to completely change the look.

FleurNancy · 13/02/2019 00:16

Yes! In our old house we had a B&Q kitchen and totally changed the look after 10 years by just replacing the doors. In this house the existing kitchen is some random oddly sized bespoke one and we couldn't find doors to fit. Cabinets and layout all fine. Spent £10k last year with Dream Doors replacing all the fronts and having composite overlay worktop. Quote to completely replace the kitchen and worktop was twice that (it's big). It was sooo simple and made such a dramatic transformation, we absolutely love it, couldn't be more pleased.

FleurNancy · 13/02/2019 00:18

Oh and two new sinks and taps in that as well. Plus all end panels, kickboards, etc etc

TremoloGreen · 13/02/2019 00:56

2k to buy about 15 doors and handles (nothing fancy), two new units (90cm pan drawers and a small wall unit), interior wire work to two units, plinths and end panels, new Neff induction hob and extractor fan. Fitted it all ourselves except electrics, not sure what that cost as we had a full rewire to do and the electrician bundled that in. We used larks and larks online to order everything. DIY kitchens will do similar. It totally transformed the kitchen, and the reconfiguration made it much more useable - lots of small useless drawers before and every run ended with a weird open bookcase unit. Lots of visitors thought it was a new kitchen.

@Bestseller
I've sent you a pm

Apologies, I know this is a really old thread.
Thinking of getting the same done. Would you be kind enough to tell me the name of this company based in Essex? Cheers
