Has anyone’s child done the milk ladder? (For milk reintroduction)

Ds is 8. He was tested as a baby for a milk allergy (positive) and retested at 4 (positive). He was retested a few weeks back and it was found to be ok for him to try milk reintroduction (decided by his paediatrician). So we were given a sheet of paper with the milk ladder on it and told to come back in four months.

So, we did week 2 where ds was given biscuits with milk in. He started having a bit of reflux and smelly wind. Was told by paediatrician to skip the next two steps as they involved egg products (ds is allergic) so the next step was mash with milk in. He had that and had stomach aches that kept him up at night and then diarrhoea.

My question is- how much supervision should we be having on this? Because the paediatrician is unreliable (kept cancelling our appointments for months and then once didn’t even tell us so we turned up at the hospital to be told he wouldn’t be there. Oh and it took three phone calls by me for him to eventually ring me back a week later) so I can’t get hold of him to keep asking if we should give up or what.

The milk ladder sheet says it should be done under supervision of a dietician.

I did it five times (she failed the first four) with no supervison, the dietician was working on an eighteen month appointment time and so I just tried it myself!
The hv told me to try each stage as directed and then if she had any symptoms to stop and start from the first stage again in six weeks. I did leave longer between trying again and she was 2 and 10 months when she finally passed it, but as I said previously we did everything ourselves and just hoped for the best!

Are you using the new milk ladder?

It's been revised for children with multiple allergies and is simpler with less steps and less sugar.

I would and have stopped at reflux and smelly wind. That's a sign it's not resolved if you got that on step 1!

DS outgrew his egg allergy and we did ten ladder but haven't gotten past step one yet with the milk ladder. He is similar age so suspect we've got s way to go yet.

@gingajewel that’s interesting about trying again 6 weeks later. I wonder why the wait makes a difference, do you know?

@majaandme no we’ve definitely got an old one, it’s all crappy unhealthy food, a load of biscuits and cake. I’ll stop where we are on it for the moment then and give up for a bit. Wonder if I can find the new one online as it sounds better.

DD is nearly 6 and still cannot drink milk.

Shes fine with it in all foods, yoghurts & creme freshe.

She said she doesnt want to try anymore as it tastes horrible and its meant for baby cows! She wants to stick to Soya, Coconut, Almond & Oat.
So Im not going to bother at the moment. Shes made her choice.

When you say you have been retested, who does the tests & what do they do?

The consultant that saw DD 3 years ago said to do the introducing ourselves and we have never been asked back.

Btw DD has the non-IgE allergy, so reacts 3-4 hours later, not the immunoglobulin E (IgE).

Here's the new one and the recipes are here

I would stop. Wind and reflux are pretty unpleasant, especially at school.
