Baby looks at hands?

I’ve read “baby looks at hands” is a milestone round 8-10 weeks. What exactly does this mean? Dd has never held her hands out and admired them, but does do other things with her hands (bat at objects, chew hand, hit herself in the face when tired Confused)

Holding out hands and admiring them is pretty much what babies looking at hands is. I can't remember how old my DD was when she did this, but I do remember going in after a nap to find her gazing at her hands and moving them around.

I think it's something to do with the baby's realisation that these things belong to me, are part of my body and I can control them.

I wouldn't worry too much, DC1 never did that or quite a lot of other traditional baby stuff either (sucking her feet etc) but she crawled at 5 months and walked at 8 months. Other then that's she's pretty normal.

DC2 however appears to have paid better attention to the baby books and does stare at her hands etc.

All babies are different, as long as she's generally showing an interest in stuff happening around her then not specifically looking at her hands probably isn't an issue.

I wouldn’t worry, I honestly can’t remember if dd looked at her hands and she’s only 2! As long as she’s looking at other things etc I wouldn’t think there’s anything wrong at all.

Thank you, yes she looks at loads of other things, quite interested in pattens and faces and the cat! Also reached out with hands to hit rattle toy, so seems she understands they’re connected and she can control them? But never gazes dreamily at them...

Some babies never gaze dreamily at anything Grin
