I’m dreading it already and it’s not until the end of the month.

I swore I’d never have one again. It’s probably been 5/6 years since my last one. I just hate the thought and feeling panicky already.

I suffer with GAD so this may have some impact on how I’m feeling.

Any positive stories/ thoughts/ advice please. Sad

Yes if you can have the plastic speculum it's much nicer. I'm not sure anyone uses metal ones anymore to be honest. Try to chat to the nurse so you're not focusing on what she is doing. I don't even feel it but clearly I have a massive fanny!

Angelinthenightx · 27/02/2019 21:30

I had mine 2 weeks ago i spoke away to the nurse she was lovely, she doesnt like getting hers either, it wasnt painful , i was a bit tender that night but not bad had sex the next night so i was fine. Ive been getting mine since i was 18 im now 39. If anyone is worried, scared tell the nurse who is doing it ,she will help u get through it.

Georgie I’ve just come back from mine, I was dreading it, always took ages and faffing as I had a tilted cervix. The whole app took 5 minutes and that was talking to the nursery before and after. She said your cervix can change position after childbirth and it was the quickest least painful smear I’ve ever had.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 01/03/2019 11:11

Just thought I should come back and update.

I went, I survived.

I’ll be honest, it did hurt a bit but purely because I was tense, it took her three goes before I was relaxed enough and once she was in and open so to speak, I was fine. I didn’t feel the brush at all. I was surprised when she said it was done, she was literally 15-20 seconds.

I did bleed a teeny tiny bit and have a slightly odd feeling afterwards, almost like when you bump yourself on the cross bar of a bike!

Just need to wait for results now and hope it’s all clear.

Good luck to anyone with their’s coming up. Flowers

Haven’t commented before but had seen your thread. Well done for going. I get anxious about mine but am determined not to let that stop me keeping a check on my health. Good on you OP!

Well done Georgie. You faced the fear and did it anyway.

MondieBee · 01/03/2019 11:32

Why don't people feel anxious that could be abnormal cells multiplying right now that they are missing by not going? That kind of thought has me terrified, surely thats anxiety provoking. Seems madness to not feel anxiety about that but to be scared for a few minutes with a nurse.

Well done for going op.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 01/03/2019 11:36

I suffer with anxiety, I feel anxious about it all! Just because I’ve voiced one fear, doesn’t mean I don’t have others.

I had mine the other week I'm 32 and it's the first one I've ever had as I suffer terrible anxiety. Had my results back Wednesday I have severe abnormal cells. Got a phone call yesterday I've gta go for treatment Monday. 😕 I haven't really slept as I know it could be nothing but it could also be something. I have two babies and just thinking what if.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 01/03/2019 12:28

Sorry to hear that Tanya, I hope it goes ok Flowers

Well done OP! You should be proud of yourself.

tanya1986 · 01/03/2019 12:47

Thank you. Hope you have good results. Anxiety sucks but good you got it done. My younger sister is now getting hers done because my results woke her up as she also has anxiety and two LO to think of

Well done Georgie! I had mine a couple of weeks ago and I was nervous enough, without having GAD, so you did brilliantly getting it done. Have a fabulous weekend Smile.

MaMaMaMySharona · 01/03/2019 15:18

@tanya1986 this happened to me after my most recent smear too, and I totally panicked. Firstly, if they've booked you an appointment next week then it isn't that urgent (my friend is a nurse and has said if they have concerns they get you in really quickly).

I was sent a leaflet with more information on the procedure, but it's very similar to a smear, but with a camera. I was shown my cervix on a screen! They showed me the cells that they were concerned about, dyed the area and took some photos as well as taking a sample (this didn't hurt at all).

At best I'd say the procedure was uncomfortable, but no more than usual. The women were absolutely lovely and made me feel very safe. The woman who carried out the procedure told me at the time the cells didn't look cancerous. That was about 3 weeks ago, I'm still waiting for my results but am thinking that no news is probably good news at this point.

I hope it all goes ok for you, sending a hand hold Flowers

BatsAreCool · 01/03/2019 15:24

I recently had mine done and due to very painful ones in the past dread them. Whilst my head knows it a good thing to get them done it doesn't stop the anxiety and dread of actually doing it.

I wish people wouldn't belittle people's fears as they are perfectly valid and it doesn't actually actually help anyone other than making themselves feel more important.

tanya1986 · 02/03/2019 00:48

@MaMaMaMySharona I had my results on Wednesday, they phoned me Thursday and got me in Monday so it is happening pretty quick. My Mam is coming with me so I don't have to drive (lucky she's visiting else I'd have no child care) my step dad is watching my two LOs so that's one stress gone. I think I'm more worried as I keep thinking that I've never had a smear test so how long has it been like this... so stupid of me and I'm kicking myself because I know for a fact I would not of had this done if I didn't have my children. the nurse phoned me and said I see you have a doctors appointment on this day (implant removal) so just wait in waiting room afterwards and we shall call you. they know I would agree to them then when the time came I always had a reason why I couldn't attend.

No news is defo good news, have everything crossed for you.

sorry op I don't mean to hi-jack your post x
