I’m on day one of no smoking and feeling insanely positive. I imagine later on in the day I’m going to crumble. To all you who have given up please tell me how great you feel now so I can read back when I’m struggling. Thank you!!!

You are AMAZING! You've got this! ( hoping to join your club later this month!)

importantkath · 11/02/2019 13:36

Well done!!!!! 11 years for me and I have never looked back. You can do it! Remember, baby steps all the way...

gamerchick · 11/02/2019 13:36

I can't remember when I gave up now. I've had the odd puff on a night out and it was awful.

I used the quick most though, I couldn't have gone cold turkey. Maybe have some gum or something in for when you feel a bit weak.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 11/02/2019 14:27

I gave up about 15 years ago, not had a puff since. I just kept reminding myself that, however much I enjoyed smoking, I enjoyed being a non-smoker more. I love not smoking! The urges to have a fag don't last long, you just have to endure them.

You can do it!

Cruddles · 11/02/2019 14:36

when I gave up 14 years ago two things stayed in my head when I had an urge:

"75% of the population get by just fine without this, so can you"
"going for a fag won't solve the problem that's causing you stress"

I found it was a mental and habitual change rather than nicotine withdrawals. You can do the same!

Somuchroom · 11/02/2019 15:42

Thank you!!! I have the strongest patch on and one of those inhalers to help when it gets tough. No way could I go cold turkey and I appaud those who have, I’m in awe. I’m not going to lie, I’ve spent the last ten minutes sucking on the inhaler and reading your words. I can do this. I can do this. I can do this.

I quit 4 years ago using champix and it worked great. Not had one since the day I gave up. I hate the smell now but sometimes out of the blue I get nicotine cravings even if I'm not around anyone who is smoking at the time.

ivegonegreyfindingausername · 11/02/2019 15:56

I stopped at the end of May, used a vape with nicotine for about 5 wk then just the fluids and after about another 5 wks I stopped that too. Have had the odd puff since when I've had a craving that hasn't shifted for days and I have 1/2 puffs and it's disgusting. It really is like licking an ashtray...

My only issue was Xmas party I got so very drunk and had a few cigs. My chest in the morning was awful like I had smoked 40...

checkoutchick22 · 11/02/2019 15:57

You're awesome and youve got this. You may have some bad times but just remember it's going to get sooo good!
You'll be free. I've stopped for around 4 years now. I tried everything and struggled every time I attempted but I never gave up trying.
Good luck, you CAN do this

Lottapianos · 11/02/2019 16:04

Well done OP! You absolutely can do this. I gave up 6 years ago and can recommend it very highly. There will be shit moments and intense cravings but they really don't last long. Drink lots of water and eat well, try to get enough sleep and generally look after yourself. You have got this!

Darkestnight · 11/02/2019 17:14

Also put the money you would spend on cigs in a jar or something as it soon mounts up quite quickly and treat yourself.
Well done op you got this

ememem84 · 11/02/2019 17:22

You got this! It will be tough but you can do it.

I’m 12 years smoke free this year.

If I’m honest the first 3 months are the worst. But. You can do it. One day at a time.

Agree about keeping the money you would have spent in a jar or something. It’ll spur you on if you can see the savings!

Clutterfreeintraining · 11/02/2019 17:26

Well done, OP!!
I gave up last August. I had two fags on NYE but nothing since.
Actually, reading your thread has made me realise I haven't even really thought about smoking over the last couple of weeks.
I downloaded an app that tells me how many days it's been since I gave up and various health trackers.

ItsJustMe2019 · 11/02/2019 17:29

You can do this! I have been off them for just over a year. Not going to lie but some days I do still struggle. But the benefits are so worth it. I now have more money and am much fitter.

grannycake · 11/02/2019 17:34

If you slip up and have one count the cigs you haven't smoked rather than how many you have

Fuppy · 11/02/2019 17:35

Gave up in December. Cold turkey for me. The first 24 hours was the worst for me, each day after got easier & easier.

I found it helped to know that each craving lasts for 10-20mins at its worst. Find things you can do to keep your mind off of it for that amount of time. Like an addictive phone game.

Giving up is easy, not starting again is harder, there are still times I'd love to have one, but most of time I don't even think about it. You got this.

Kenworthington · 11/02/2019 17:37

Good luck op! You can do this! I stopped two months ago (using hypnotherapy). Before that I smoked 20 a day for 28 years. I don’t miss it day to day though I can’t lie I struggled a bit on a drunken night out last weekend. But day to day no cravings at all. You can totally do this! 💪🏼💪🏼

Somuchroom · 11/02/2019 21:54

These are great. Really good hearing how well you have all done. Love the jar idea and have downloaded an app to help motivate me.
Thank you!!! I will be back to reread in my times of need!

My husband gave up over ten years ago when he was found to have blood pressure
What he wished he had been told was how much smoking affects teeth and gums
He stopped ..and never restarted
Good luck
Your good health is all to play for

Dowser · 11/02/2019 22:00

High blood pressure and I’m so,pleased he was a non smoker when we met
It would’ve been a deal breaker.

Clutterfreeintraining · 12/02/2019 18:08

How are you doing today, op?

Somuchroom · 12/02/2019 18:30

Oh thank you so much for checking in. I’m doing good still, found today much easier. I love the app. It tells me how many hours of my life I’ve regained and to think I get to spend that extra time with my DS is a strong incentive. Also the fact I can smother him in kisses, before I wouldn’t even want to cuddle because I am paranoid about second hand smoke and toxins on me. I feel very proud of myself but am aware it’s still early days and once I wean myself of nicotine replacement, the hard work will start...

4 years here.
Try and change your habits. Eg I’d come home from a night out and have a glass of wine and a ciggie. I stopped that glass of wine when I quit (initially) as I knew the temptation would be to spark up.
Good luck. I don’t really think of cigs any more. I do still love the smell though!

Percy11 · 12/02/2019 18:40

Oh and distraction if you have a craving. Distract yourself with something else. Go for a walk, make a cup of tea, call someone, do ANYTHING but light that cigarette!
