NHS vasectomy?

Dp and I were talking about him getting the snip. It's not something hes desperately keen on but will do it. He reckons it's hard to get doctors to agree to them nowadays though.

Circumstances:
Hes 48, I'm 40
We have 1 ds age 7
We definitely don't want more and neither of us would want more should we split up
Currently using withdrawal method (I know, i know... more dps choice than mine)

Is he right about doctors?

Playmobilpirate I'm not an expert but dont know of any that will leave a women with permanent and irreversible damage to their sexual function

Long term effects of childbirth that can cause permanent and irreversible damage to sexual function:

  • incontinence, urinary and fecal
  • prolapse of the vagina, uterus, or rectum. Or all three. And the repair process is hit and miss (just look at the news stories on vaginal mesh)
  • scarring from tears and episiotomies affecting function and sensation
  • PTSD from traumatic delivery
  • hysterectomy which can cause lack of sexual appetite, loss of sensation, dryness, etc
  • changes to physical and mental health affecting self-image such as stretch-marks, loose skin, changes to breast size and shape, hemmerhoids, hair loss, loss of identity, PND, anxiety

If not a vasectomy for the bloke, how easy is it to get tubes tied/clipped...?

spreadingchestnuttree · 12/02/2019 13:39

Female sterilisation is essentially abdominal surgery under a general anaesthetic so much harder to get approval. Vasectomy is a minor procedure done under local anesthetic, often at a GP surgery rather than at hospital.

DH was referred straight away and got his appointment about 12 weeks later. It was totally fine! I went to the appointment but I needn't have, him asking seemed enough for the GP (and rightly so).

EstrellaDamn · 12/02/2019 13:45

Hmm it's almost as if side effects, damage and pain for women aren't considered to be as important as those for me.

Who would've thought it! Angry

ReaganSomerset · 12/02/2019 13:53

I don't think he's serious about getting it done, OP (though looking at the list of potential side-effects I can't say I blame him - roll on, male contraceptive pill!)

Are you related @EwItsAHooman and @LookImAHooman?

No, pure coincidence I'm sure.

LookImAHooman · 12/02/2019 14:01

spreading fair dos. Just wondered if the comparative fewer long-term risks offset things at all, but then there’s the short term risk with GA etc (even before considering cost)... We’ve always agreed DH will have the snip but knowing our luck, he will be that 1 in 10...

Reagan not AFAIK. But maybe ew does in fact know me. And loathe me Wink

Post-Vasectomy Pain Syndrome (PVPS)

PVPS is a syndrome involving chronic pain following a vasectomy, which may present immediately or delayed up to several years later. Most men do not suffer from ongoing pain but some studies have reported 3-10% of patients noting some issues.

The characteristics of the pain can vary between cases from constant pain to intermittent pain that intensifies during certain activities, such as sexual intercourse or extensive physical exertion. The pain may affect one or both testicles and may be described as a dull ache or sharp and intense pain.

Cannot find the data on the NHS website

Aridane · 12/02/2019 14:40

The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) put this figure as being up to 15% for chronic testicular pain and up to 5% for pain so severe it affects day to day activities

Troublesome chronic testicular pain is reported in up to 15% of patients and can be severe enough to affect day-to-day activities in up to 5%

You don't? One potential for those with female sterilisation is increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, which can lead to the permanent and irreversible damage that is death.

he would personally never have one when there are so many problems cropping up as the female sterilisation with clips had barely any problems noted bar immediate post operative pain.

Never mind increased risk of ectopic pregnancy or not insignificant numbers of women reporting increased period pain as long the Da Man's Mighty Balls and Peen are untouched.

Female sterilisation also has a higher failure rate than male sterilisation but hey, A Man Has Spoken.

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 12/02/2019 15:32

Very true, Estrelle. I had a Mirena coil migrate and embed itself in my uterine wall. Wow, that was very painful and I had to have an operation under GA to get it out. DH has a vasectomy and walked right out after. DS has autism and we have 3 kids, he had no problem getting referred.

EmmaJR1 · 12/02/2019 16:41

Dh had one 3 weeks ok on nhs first appointment 2.5 mths ago so no not hard at all and dr was fine.

PlaymobilPirate · 12/02/2019 21:14

He'd never do it

Do you know my dp then?

Hes brought it up tonight - they've been talking about it at work. Half the lads in his staff room have had one. All are fine!

DH only waited a few weeks between GP enquiry and getting it done so the waiting list isn't that long in some areas.

whatdoidonowffs · 12/02/2019 22:25

Two months for me from gp to getting it done
No side effects at all
I had it done on the Saturday morning and was back at work on the Monday 👍👍
