Do people really have this many unworn clothes in their wardrobe?

I know a lot of people have unworn clothes in their wardrobe. I'm guilty of this too and I do have one or two things.

I'm on a Facebook selling group for a certain clothing brand (rather than a local Facebook selling group) and I'm often amazed by people having clearouts who are selling as many as ten or more items that are all Brand New With Tags that they never got round to wearing. I could understand it more if the clothes had been worn, but they haven't.

I must admit I'm probably biased because I'm a lot more careful these days about shopping - I think through carefully if I'm really going to wear the item, and I consider cost per wear. I started doing this in order to avoid wasting money.

Do people really have this many unworn clothes? I know we all live differently but I find it fascinating and odd at the same time. I know I've done it too but not on this scale.

I think that some of the items may not have been purchased, if you know what I mean.

I know enough people who are constantly clearing out their wardrobes, especially the kids ones. The amount of stuff they have is unreal but I guess it's surprisingly normal now that we've got access to cheap clothes. Don't know anyone with a lot bnwt stuff though, just the occasional one it seems. I would say they'd have to be a shopaholic because they're obviously buying stuff they don't need.

This had crossed my mind and it could be true for a couple of people, but surely not all of them. I really wonder if their they're just people with a lot more money than me who can afford to take a more blazé attitude towards clothes shopping.

I'm like this with my children I have sizes 0-3 all the way up to the 2-3 mostly worn once or brand new with tags I'm talking 5 black bags full. Plus my kids have a chest and draws and wardrobe full of clothes they wear now. We are bad with over buying clothes and shoes for them, but me? I own around 7 pairs of jeans that I wear maybe 4 off, about 10 tops I wear two off, two pairs of shoes, no dresses no heels no smart jackets, I wear my dh old coat as it's still new and I love it. It's weird and it does get me down sometimes but I'm in the house so much I mainly wear pjs now and have untold pairs of those. Confused

I've got bagfuls if unworn clothes that I need to sell. Bought and then didn't fit or just didn't like etc.

anitagreen · 10/02/2019 17:35

My Nan is actually the worst for this she will go to next and spend £150 on clothes for them and some we don't ever get round to using as then a few months later it'll be from Matalan etc and that's more practical for me as they are cheaper and can be worn at nursery. So the next stuff ends up unworn

tectonicplates · 10/02/2019 17:36

Bought and then didn't fit or just didn't like etc.

But if it didn't fit then I don't understand why you'd keep it in the first place. How come you didn't return it?

My mum is terrible for this. So much stuff just sat there, she just likes to have it and imagine wearing it all. Plus side is I never need to buy any clothes for my kids..

tectonicplates · 10/02/2019 18:40

I can understand it more with children's clothes as children grow so fast!

I always think I have too many clothes and I'm trying to get rid of stuff, but then I see people with far more than me. I know it's all relative but at least most of mine have actually been worn.

I’m an impulse/eBay buyer. I have loads of bnwt clothes that I regularly charity shop. I’m not rich, but you’d think I was 😭

CherryPavlova · 10/02/2019 23:02

I tend to buy several things the same but different colours when I see something I like for work. I also buy for the wrong season in sales - jumpers etc and I recently bought several jackets, dresses and shirts when we were in Hong Kong as in a week I could have a whole lot made to measure quite cheaply. It means I have an amount of unworn clothes in my wardrobes.
I’m also sometimes tempted by lovely shoes but after trying them on at home I realise their loveliness is superficial and they are going to make me very grumpy if I actually go out in them. I must have a dozen or more very beautiful but dreadfully uncomfortable pairs of shoes.
