18 month old son cutting his molars i think but cant get him to open his mouth to look. In the last 4 days he’s eaten a handful of cherios 2 fromage frais and a pack of blueberries thats it. Wont drink milk or water but has drank abit of squash. Cannot for the life of me give him calpol or teething gel- had to put calpol in his juice!! Everytime i try to put teething gel on it either goes on his lips and thats it or his front few teeth cant get it on his gums or towards the back. Feel fully helpless (can’t even imagine how he feels).

Don’t know how long is safe for him not to eat for. Every time i try to get him to eat I get so stressed even though i tell myself each time i’ll be patient It’s just getting too much he’s never been like this teething and i’ve definitely had it too good up til now because i’m feeling like I can’t cope and I’m counting down the hours until work and I can have a break which feels so shit. Needed a rant sorry, but also how do you get teething gel on a toddler?!

Ah a messy job.

Tried on your lap, tip back with a whoopsie to make him laugh and (with finger pre loaded) swipe molars?

Calpol over an eggcup full of ice cream?

I seem to remember getting bitten a fair bit at that age...until they realised that it helped (not sure if it was the massage with a cold finger or the actual gel that helped). Ice in the sippy cup to make the drink very cold helped too.

Anbesol is easier to apply than gel as it doesn’t slide off your finger or their gums. Try and make a game of it you open your mouth like a dinosaur see if they can do the same.

Or failing that dip a corner of a muslin or flannel into the Anbesol and see if they will bite it, same maybe with a toothbrush?

My DD chewed the hell out of anything she could get her hands on when she was teething, so we used to put the gel on her dummy and she’d put it where it was needed.

Second Abnesol - think you have to ask for it at the pharmacy. Works a million times better than any of the gels or powders.

We found the teething powders far better than the gels. Easier to use and more effective. Boots do their own.

Bonjela spread over two fingertips, and in you go! Rub gently on gums. Watch out in case he bites!
