What do you call the room you sit in?

So is it a sitting room, a lounge, a family room, a TV room, a front room, a drawing room?! I'm not from the UK originally and I guess this may be class related. My husband calls it the lounge so we go with that, my family back home call it a sitting room however.

Op just call it whatever comes naturally.

No-one worth knowing will actually judge you by what you call the room where you sit and watch telly Grin

Other options
Family room
Den
?

We have a living room and a snug.

LittleBearPad · 10/02/2019 16:37

Sitting room.

There is no class denominator in the terms, simply room definitions.

This is not true.

April241 · 10/02/2019 16:40

Living room here

riotlady · 10/02/2019 16:40

Living room.

I think front room v living room is a regional thing rather than class? The side of the family that are in Lancashire all have front rooms, the ones in Northumberland have a living room.

Knittedfairies · 10/02/2019 16:40

Sitting room.

walkingtheplank · 10/02/2019 16:43

I'd say Lounge. I had no idea it was so declassé.

ShadyLady53 · 10/02/2019 16:44

Living room mainly. Occasionally lounge.

workshyfop · 10/02/2019 16:51

The DCs refer to ours as ‘the telly room’ and it’s stuck so we all call it that now

MistyMaudMilou · 10/02/2019 17:11

I call it the sitting room, living room and front room. Whichever pops into my head first. Husband calls it the front room. I grew up calling it the sitting room. My mum has a sitting room upstairs and a morning room downstairs!

TeacupDrama · 10/02/2019 17:20

my parents call the receptions rooms the lounge and the dining room ( west midlands)
I call my room the library it's my retreat and a toy free zone some people would call it a snug I never would, the other main reception room is the sitting or living room, DD calls it TV room her toys are there too, we are in Scotland

WingsofNylon · 10/02/2019 17:26

Sitting room for the main one.

I'd use living room in other people's houses if it was an open plan type set up I suppose. Or had dual use, such as sofas and a dinning table or play area in it.

Lounge gives me the hebiejebbies, as it gives me an image of a slightly tubby man slouched on a sofa in his not so white pants....

No objection to other people using it though.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 10/02/2019 17:26

Front room - which is actually at the front & then the room at the back which is technically DD's playroom but where we spend most time is the 'other room' not sure why it's not the back room but that's just how it is.

Bluntness100 · 10/02/2019 17:27

This is not true

Yes it is. It used to be there was a class denominator, but not any more, people use the terms inter changeably and often inaccurately.

Things like front room possibly still do and are regional,

Bubastes · 10/02/2019 17:28

Nah. Like everything in the UK different words to describe the same thing always have class connotations.

Meandmetoo · 10/02/2019 17:31

Front room. No idea why as I don't have a back room!

CountFosco · 10/02/2019 17:42

We have 2 'living' rooms. One is called the playroom by us, but other people usually call it the family room. Probably a more accurate description TBH so might become that eventually. The other one is the sitting room (or the library but that's a bit of a family joke).

In the extended family the following terms are used for rooms people sit in: living room, study, sitting room, lounge, porch, family room, snug.

Bluntness100 · 10/02/2019 17:52

We also often call the second living room thr play room, probably as that's what we called when our daughter was young and it stuck. Now it houses the play station, x box etc, as well as a tv and sofas. More and more though I find us referring it to it as the other living room.

Technically it is a sitting room and the main one is a living room though, but I can't imagine I will ever call it the sitting room.,

joystir59 · 10/02/2019 17:53

Living room

Megan2018 · 10/02/2019 17:55

Sitting room or living room. I prefer sitting room but it was living room when I was little

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 10/02/2019 17:58

Our living room has doors between it and the kitchen and is where we have our visitors whereas our snug has bookcases and is really just for DH, DC & I.
Both have a stove, tv and comfy sofas.

flowery · 10/02/2019 17:59

Lounge. I would feel like I was trying to be posh or something if I called it sitting room or living room.

The term lounge doesn’t remotely suit the actual room in question in our house, but it’s stuck anyway, that’s what it always was growing up.

(Mind you I still have to remind myself to say coaster rather than beer mat...)

Boom76 · 10/02/2019 18:00

We have a sitting room and a family room. Growing up, I’d always say living room though

3out · 10/02/2019 18:03

I disagree with the two living room comment. If you have two living rooms (and are hyacinth bucket-esque) then you’d probably refer to them as the sitting room and the drawing room. ‘Living room’ wouldn’t pass the debretts test.
Of course, you can call the rooms in your own home whatever the heck you like though!

blueskiesovertheforest · 10/02/2019 18:15

I don't care about the debrets test but if someone living in anything smaller than a stately home invited me to sit in the drawing room I'd assume that they were trying to be amusing!
