Pupil strike on Friday over climate change.

DS said on Friday the pupils at his school might walk out on Friday over climate change. I did not realise at the time it was a national thing. Not impressed with this, what are the children going to do for three hours. We have had nothing official from the school. Has anyone?

Thanks!

Above link includes extracts with the link to the study included.

Bear in mind that the study was written in 2011, and technological changes have made renewables even cheaper and reliable.

I did wonder how many of the kids that protested about climate change got a beefburger from MacDonald's on the way home we eat almost no meat and one of my children is vegan. They feel strongly about this stuff! I bet more of those on the march are veggie or vegan than in the general population. Those that are into 'causes' tend to cluster a bit- this isn't a bad thing, just think constantly mocking kids as if they are too stupid to realise the consequences of their actions is a bit rich.

A long past boyfriend was marketing manager of one of the big glass bottle manufacturers. This was many years ago Blush before recycling became the norm but glass manufacturers were trying to encourage it (iirc, it actually helps the furnaces run more efficiently). I remember him saying that the most effective way to increase recycling was to go into schools - especially primary schools - as the kids were very effective nags of their parents to change their habits! Grin

Spring. I wasn't mocking I was just wondering if they had made the connection between climate change and the meat and dairy industry. So many people talk about climate change and how they've made changes to their car, they recycle, buy local, donate to charity etc but still continue to consume a heavy meat and dairy diet.
I eat a mostly plant based diet myself.

I live in one of the towns on “stike” it made the news etc, DD is at one of the secondary schools, in her 14 year old words, “ loads of people are just doing it to get out of school”
She didn’t. It didn’t create a drama in the town at all. They interviewed one girl, she was a privately educated girl who spoke well, but the vast majority were just walking around taking selfies and getting over excited at the drama!! Seemed a bit pointless to be honest. I’m not taking anything away from the issue but I don’t feel it achieved anything 🤷‍♀️

hilbobaggins · 17/02/2019 00:11

Hi, @Tiscold,

If you’re going to cut and paste huge great chunks of text from the internet, could you at least let us know your source? Thanks.

Tiscold · 17/02/2019 01:06

Now it's only fair for you to prove your statements as well...

These people need cheap, efficient, powerful energy of the type that only fossil fuels can provide = So fossil fuel can only provide this, even my sources state renewables are now the cheapest form of energy?

I won't ask you to back up the rest of your statements as it was mainly waffle about how it's only middle class people that care and that young people just want others to make changes. Which obviously is your opinion, wrong opinion maybe, but your opinion that you won't have sources for

Fetching · 17/02/2019 03:10

All the huffy snideness from Tory MPs and Tory flying monkeys (like that tragic wanker Toby Young) is so fucking dull. You're attacking soon-to-be voters, you witless morons. Nothing illustrates more clearly the increasing irrelevance of the Conservative and Unionist Party than the mocking and jeering they directed at these teens.

DippyAvocado · 17/02/2019 08:52

You're attacking soon-to-be voters, you witless morons.

Totally agree. The sort of kids who will engage in activism are likely to be the ones who will turn up at the voting booths next election time.

KissingInTheRain · 17/02/2019 09:03

The sort of kids who will engage in activism are likely to be the ones who will turn up at the voting booths next election time.

For as long as the far left is in charge of Labour it won’t matter. For every idealistic new voter putting their cross for Labour there’ll be three older Labour voters changing their vote, or not voting. And the Greens and Lib Dems are no threat to anyone (and both have other problems).

I’m afraid that until Labour returns to normality the Tories can do what they like.

‘Tiscold take a bow

Tiscold · 17/02/2019 10:47

Why thank you, I'm always happpy to back up and provide sourced when asked.
Especially from the credible organisation i look at to get my information such as universities, wwf, friends of the earth, mercycorps, the eu, the govs own data, world economic forum etc

alreadytaken · 17/02/2019 12:38

This seems like a good place to publicise carbon offset. We cant reduce our carbon footprint to zero but if you care about the impact on other parts of the world you can choose to help in a number of ways, including this. www.carbonfootprint.com/offset.aspx?o=11

Loving your work, tiscold.

Tiscold · 17/02/2019 18:46

Merci @crackofdoom

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 19/02/2019 10:23

Time for an optimistic environmental Tuesday note: with my invention lawyer hat on, I have had three major car manufacturers over the past two years come back to my clients saying "you know that invention you have for making petrol cars go faster? Can you use that to measure and reduce emissions instead?" Or words to that effect (I've altered details to avoid being struck off but you get the gist). Advanced warnings are also being issued to suppliers indicating when the automotive player in question will cease to accept new ideas for the internal combustion engine. And the biggest customer bar none for clean energy is China.

I can't match Tiscold for detail but I can pass on encouraging snippets of info from the factory floor....

Tiscold · 19/02/2019 15:14

That's interesting and good news @Amoregentlemanlikemanner.

I don't want to say it's my work or detail, it's just information I've found through research Grin.

I do think EV will be a game changer for the enviroment, however we need a fossil fuel free energy system for it to be worth it.
Personally i think the 2040 deadline should have been 2030 and what's disappointing is that large vans and lorries and motorbikes can still be sold as petrol or diesel after 2040 as the legislation doesn't include them.

I also can't wait to see if the government will start heavily taxing the older petrol and diesel cars to force people to buy new cleaner cars.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 19/02/2019 16:36

2040 is not even close to being a figure that the car companies are giving us. It's way, way earlier.

crackofdoom · 19/02/2019 20:57

Is it true that Volvo are stopping selling internal combustion vehicles this year?

Tiscold · 19/02/2019 21:26

Wow that's great shame the governemnt couldn't bring the target down then
