So fed up of being skint!

The car needs to go into the garage.

The dog needs to go to the vet.

Despite working as many extra shifts as possible just fed up of never getting ahead, always being poor - always something cropping up that needs paying for. Feels like a constant treadmill! Trying to save up for things (like a holiday, haven't been on holiday for years!) but something always scuppers the plans and the money needs to be used for that.

If worth anything myself and DH both work full time too!! Just barely scraping by it feels like ☹️

The dog surely must take priority over a car.!

Weetinkermonkey they may be on a good wage

Then they're not skint, they're shit at prioritising. How much does a horse cost a month? How much does a dog?

stayathomer · 11/02/2019 13:02

Weetinkermonkey Sorry, who has a horse? And not shit at prioritising, if you have bills ( bank loans for student loan and loans associated with getting house), then property tax, local authority tax, health insurance, car loan, life assurance ... that take up so much of the wage that you have to pick and choose what bills you pay each month I wouldn't call it bad prioritising, I'd just call it not having enough money to go around. I appreciate you have it tough but I'm just saying that people on a good wage can still be trying to survive too

We're in the same boat too op. Dh works 14hr days, I'm a sahm looking after our 5 children. We never seem to have money, it all goes on debt and bills and whatever the kids need. Last week dh van broke, cost £700 to get it fixed so that's our holiday gone this year. Every time we save for something ie new cooker, fridge ect something always comes up and breaks us. I'm hoping to start working part time soon so hopefully that might help but our youngest doesn't start nursery until next year so not sure if it's even worth it working when we'd have to pay childcare 😩

And before anyone asks "why have kids then" well because we wasn't in this situation when we had them, things can go wrong at any point.

WeeTinkerMonkey · 11/02/2019 13:30

Sorry, who has a horse?

The OP has a horse, has for at least 6 years.

stayathomer · 11/02/2019 13:44

Do you know the horse thing from another thread? Just can't find it ...

HoraceCope · 11/02/2019 13:47

And dental bills, we have those

namechangedforanon · 11/02/2019 13:57

Why don't you join our make £10 a day thread over on money matters? X

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 11/02/2019 14:01

5 kids will do it thatsmyspace

TeacupDrama · 11/02/2019 14:12

There is skint ie it doesn't matter what you choose there is barely enough money for food and heat and basic rent in danger of being homeless or choosing between food and electricity for warmth

then there is not enough money at the end of month because of costs, some costs like the amount of mortgage, car loans, credit card repayments are a choice so is health insurance ( in UK) so is having pets, signing up to certain contracts on phones Tv's etc sometimes people overstretch themselves with property
Someone on 40K is not truly skint but they may not have money left over as 40K is easily enough to eat and keep a house warm and pay basic rent with left over but if you have other expenses they can take up all of the leftover without any for socialising holidays etc like thatsmyspace money is tight for her but not truly skint

There was a thread a week ish ago, something like,
"What do you do for you"

04/02/2019 22:46 MyNameIsFartacus

Bought a horse when my youngest DD was 2, best thing I ever did, I felt like I was going INSANE! DD now 8 and I love my bunch of horsey mates

Thee was also a 'show us your pets' thread, OP posted a picture of 2 older looking dogs.

There is a difference between having no money, and having no money left.
One can cut costs, re-home dogs, give up horse, dependant on other bills, it phone down, cut internet and sky package, use the car less etc etc.
The other can barely afford to keep their kids fed and warm after already spending the minimum on everything.
No sky, no mobile phone contract, no car payments, no horses, no dogs, so on and so on.

So when some one moans 'Theyre poor' actually, they're not, they just choose to spend their money on things they don't need to.

See what I mean..

stayathomer · 11/02/2019 17:23

Weetinkermonkey yup, I see nowSad

TeacupDrama · 11/02/2019 18:43

as said above many costs that result in no money left ( as opposed to truly skint no money for anything) are discretionary
yes you need housing but how much is variable you may have a 400K mortgage for 3 bed semi in X district but you could have 250K mortgage for 2 bed flat a short distance away in Y district but you want to live in X as it has better schools and 3 beds is better for you than 2 beds. but actually your kids could share a room but you want them to have a room each, this is not unreasonable but it is still a discretionary cost
Because of the extra money required to fund the difference between 250 and 400K repayments you have no money left but you could live in Y many other people do as they can't live in X as they can't get a 400K mortgage so they have to live in Y whatever schools are like; so your no money left is actually a choice based on your decisions and that is fine that is your priority; but someone truly skint will not be that sympathetic because you have chosen the extra costs they were not forced on you
it is not unreasonable to have a dog or an iphone or sky but no-one has to have these
