Do you think there is a difference between "falling for someone" and "falling in love with someone"?

Hi all, I'll preface saying that I am not an English native speaker.

Out of curiosity, I was wondering if these two expressions mean different things to you or if you would use them interchangeably?

Thanks!

To me, they mean the same!

I think you could make a good argument for why they could be different things but if someone just used the phrase 'falling for someone' in conversation I'd assume that they meant falling in love.

They mean the same thing to me

I’ve always thought ‘falling for someone’ just means you fancy them.

To me falling for someone means you're doing the falling. They might or might not be falling too. Falling in love with someone implies both are involved.
