Why is there a jar of sesame seeds in my boyfriend's parent's kitchen?

We're staying at their house while they're on holiday so they're not here for me to ask them.

My boyfriend says the jar has been there for as long as he can remember and he's never seen them used and never noticed the amount in the jar increase or decrease. They're on the worktop next to the teapot and the sugar which are used multiple times daily.

It just seems so random. He has never considered why they're there.

Any ideas?

Used as baking beans maybe?

VanillaSauce · 09/02/2019 09:51

Or theres hidden money in there.

Babdoc · 09/02/2019 09:52

They’re too light to be any use as baking beans, surely? Maybe they bought them years ago for a recipe they never used again.

Whackaguacamole · 09/02/2019 09:52

They're just become blind to them after a disastrous attempt to make tahini in 1971?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 09/02/2019 09:52

One of them is training to be a magician but the Open Sesame spell is not going well

Is this really that random? I’d see sesame seeds as a fairly reasonable cupboard staple and have a jar in my cupboard. Theyre quite often called for in Asian recipes, or they’re delicious dry-toasted in a frying pan and sprinkled on salads, added to stir-fries etc and I also add them to the top of bread on the rare occasions when I bake a loaf.

iwasagirlinavillage · 09/02/2019 09:57

What makes it random is that they're seemingly never used.

So far as I'm aware they're not wiccans, but maybe something to be on the lookout for!

We sprinkle sesame seeds on stir fries and Japanese meals. Also use them when we make sushi at home.

Feelingfullandreadytoclean · 09/02/2019 10:01

Everyone has things they become blind to in their house. They probably don't even notice they are there. Not really weird or random. Just one of those things!

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 09/02/2019 10:04

It is odd that they're out in the worktop. For when you need sesame seeds in a hurry.

3out · 09/02/2019 10:06

Doesn’t everyone store the last dregs of random ingredients and keep them for twenty years before considering dumping them?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/02/2019 10:11

Your boyfriend should hide them and see what happens Wink

Springwalk · 09/02/2019 10:12

I use sesame seeds in stir frys, salads and sometimes for coating bread etc.
In theory I would do this, the reality is that the sesame seeds have been in my pantry for years and maybe used twice. I suspect that is why they are there. No one has managed to throw them out yet.

They also absorb things I seem to remember!

FruminousBandersnatch · 09/02/2019 10:14

Feng shui.

FindPrimeLorca · 09/02/2019 10:16

Vampires.

You throw a large handful of tiny seeds down on the floor and they’re compelled to stop to count them all, which gives you time to run away. Obviously it’s rarely used, but when you do suddenly find yourself confronted by a predatory vampire who’ve you’ve foolishly invited in then you’ll need them as a matter of urgency: hence the jar being out on the counter.

MaidenMotherCrone · 09/02/2019 10:22

Their weed stash is hidden inside it.

zebakrheum · 09/02/2019 10:23

Do they have any other jars of random rarely-used herbs and spices lurking in the cupboard? Juniper berries or some such? If they do, I'd be tempted to switch them over.

Lunde · 09/02/2019 10:23

They bought them for a recipe that they never made/don't make often such as Asian dishes or homemade bread

Juells · 09/02/2019 10:27

Perhaps they're used all the time, and he just never notices that the jar gets emptied and re-filled?

iwasagirlinavillage · 09/02/2019 10:30

I think I might hide them as suggested.

They will be rancid if left in daylight for too long. Ask them when you see them? Let us know
