Who's your broadband with? Moving from BT to....?

Looking for a cheaper provider. I don't need a landline but I do need reliable broadband. Have had great service with BT but it seems too much at £60ish a month....

Any recommendations?

EE and no complaints. Get a 10GB data boost on my contract (only helpful if you have a mobile with EE obviously) which will mean we can reduce our mobile bill from £80 to about £30 soon.

How come it's so expensive with BT? I pay £45 and get fibre unlimited, phone and TV with kids pack and entertainment pack.

rosamacrose · 08/02/2019 18:45

I'm with Plusnet. I have unlimited broadband £27 a month.
I stream TV, use internet. Its just me so I don't have any problem with speeds and live (it would seem) in a good area for that.
I've found their customer service helpful and their bills clear.

rosamacrose · 08/02/2019 18:55

One thing I've never understood tho.
I upgraded to fibre as the broadband kept buffering.
The fibre goes to the ' box' but the line that come to my house isn't fibre. Its copper (I think) So that seems nonsensical that they claim fibre speed to my TV. Iyswim.
I've asked and asked about this but am no wiser.
The service did improve after the upgrade but that is probably because I asked for, and got, a new router
Any enlightenment gratefully received Grin

Ahhh I made a mistake! Is £40 ish for phone & broadband, average 67Mb download speed. Average 18Mb upload speed. I need both of those.
No need for anything else.

Comparison sites are showing Vodaphone Superfast 2 at up to 63MB at £25 per month for 18 months.

Do I dare switch?!

Rosa Copper only has a certain capacity, fibre has a lot more . The more of the ‘journey’ from the exchange (several miles) that is on copper, the more conjested and slower it gets. By fibre delivering to the green cabinet at the end of the road there is less degredation to that point so its much much faster . There is then only a tiny distance to your house on copper (metres) so even though it degrades slighty it’s minimal in comparison to the speed boost that you get from fibre to the cabinet. ...god it depresses me that I know that !

Tequilamockinbird · 08/02/2019 20:18

@PrimeExample Vodafone, and most other providers use the same lines as BT, so the speed probably won't increase.

PrimeExample · 08/02/2019 20:23

Thank you, Tequila! I don't need it to be any faster, but I don't want it any slower. Do you think they are reliable?

Haggle with BT? I got them down from £70/month to £30 with one easy phonecall a few days ago.

PrimeExample · 08/02/2019 20:39

I might try again...no avail last time but I barely use my landline, so might be worth another go?

Just avoid anything related to TalkTalk as if it were a homicidal plague-carrying, pox-ridden leper. Trust me Angry

borntobequiet · 09/02/2019 11:51

I just use Vodaphone mobile data via a MiFi. Half the cost and twice the speed (or more) than BT Home Hub. You need a reasonably reliable mobile signal though.

PrimeExample · 09/02/2019 12:18

Oh yes, I’ve heard about TalkTalk Confused
I don’t have a good mobile signal so MiFi option no good, sadly...
