I am booked in to have this soon. They discussed the whole procedure at pre op but haven't said how much time you need off work and also what to do regarding exercise etc? Anyone had one and could advise? Many thanks

I had two days off work (I had the laparoscopy exactly 3 yrs ago). I wasn't allowed more than that, my boss said I could go back in and 'sit on the stool by the till' for a bit (really wasn't possible as a shop manager though!) But I was in a new job so having 'sick' time off really wasn't negotiable.
I was allowed out of hospital the same day (a few hours later) as wasn't bleeding. I felt fine, just tired but I'd only been under for an hour. The next day quite a bit of pain but that was just bad timing as my period started... which was pretty sore when I'd already been poked around. But I have bad period pain anyway.
To be honest the sorest thing was my shoulder! I can't remember why but something to do with gas? You get shoulder pain. I've known tons of people say the same! It's just an ache though
Also had a sore belly button as they stick a tube down it . For some reason I didn't know they were going to do this and couldn't work out why I was so sore there..

When I came round, they immediately asked me if I felt pain and where. Pain suddenly came flooding to my bowel (yeh, bowel! Not where they'd even been!) I told them and they put morphine into the drip and then I felt great. I was just v relieved it was all over and felt fine. I know different for everyone but I was surprised how ok I felt.
I remember sitting outside a few hours later waiting for DP to pick me up and sipping a diet coke (probably not the best choice for after an op!) and being surprised how ok I was. On the way back we actually called to see my parents for a couple of hours. Once home I just slept. But I was surprised how I didn't feel sore internally...just externally on navel.
The next day as I said, was bad..but only because of my period
I'm sure you'll be fine, goodluck

I had one a few years ago...I was expecting to go back to work after a few days but they signed me off for 2 weeks. I didn't really need that and could have gone back after a week or so. I was kept in overnight as I had a catheter in but went home in the afternoon the following day. No bleeding afterwards. The neck pain was the worst part of it all TBH. In order to see everything, they pump carbon dioxide into your stomach and some of that travels around causing the neck pain...have a warm water bottle/wheat bag to help with that. I think all hospitals have different policies with it being a day case/overnight stay so check with them at your pre-op appt.

I had one a couple of years ago. First GA op and was bricking it but absolutely fine. Groggy but very much with it when I came round (nurse was checking with the doc what room I was in and I gave her the room number), had some shoulder pain I think ca happen but was sick and it went after that.

My op was late and looking back I should have just stayed overnight but wanted my bed. So got myself up and about but felt very sick, and was sick on the way home.

Mostly stayed in bed the day after then took it very easy the next couple of days. Had a week off in all. Exercise wise I do body pump, went back 2 weeks later I think, and it was no overhead lifting and no ab work for a few weeks.

I've had a few over the years. Some decent painkillers and 2-3 days rest and you'll be fine. The air settles up under your ribs, so ribs and shoulders might ache for a day or two.

BibbityBobbityEars · 08/02/2019 13:31

I would take a week off work and probably wait 2 weeks before resuming exercise.

I felt quite fragile on days 2/3

RTBAdmin · 08/02/2019 14:54

I had 3 weeks off this time round as they had a bit of sorting out to do while they were in there so to speak!

Same. I wasn't expecting it either so ended up calling them about it to ask as it was quite uncomfortable. Not so bad when you know what it is though. Abdominal pain wasn't any worse than bad (not not terrible) period cramps.

You'll be fine. Get a hot water bottle or two and rest for a couple of days. Mine was just a keyhole exploratory one. Stitches took ages to fall out I seem to remember.

I'd take a week off btw.

Teabreakplease · 08/02/2019 15:22

I had one and was signed off work for one week. I felt minimal pain as I was prescribed painkillers but I was very tired and light headed for a few days from the anaesthetic. I thought 1 week was just right for me. Best of luck!

SeaToSki · 08/02/2019 17:13

It depends. Are they just looking to see if you have endo, or are they going to deal with it if they see it?

If they are just looking, then you will be fine in a couple of days, although I wouldnt want to do any exercise for at least 2 weeks.

If they are going to cauterise any adhesions its a different matter. You may be quite sore for a week and then touchy for another week. If there are adhesions on your bowel or bladder then when those bits start to work post op, it can be painful.

Definitely get a heating pad to sling on your chest and shoulders, they inflate your belly with gas, so they can see what they are doing and the gas goes up afterwards and makes your shoulders ache, but heat is very good for it.

Thanks for the answers

I think they are looking and will deal with what they find within reason as it's a day case in a day unit

Good luck and buy some granny knickers. Its nicer when the waist band is above the stiched points. Also lay in some nurofen and comfort food for afterwards. Some dried apricots or prunes might also be useful as the anasthetic drugs can bung you up and its better to keep it moving 😬
