3 months pregnant and been offered an amazing job

I have been offered an amazing job with great opportunities but I’ve found out I’m pregnant. I don’t know what to do.

The job is a 12 month contract so I will be on mat leave when the contract ends also I will be on mat leave 6 months after I’ve started. Do I risk it and take the job or stay put where I am?

should I tell my new employer before I accept as they’re really nice and I don’t really want to spring it on them once I’ve started.

You'll be on mat leave in about five months surely

Invisimamma · 07/02/2019 15:34

Take it! I did it was a good move for me and my contract was extended whilst on mat leave Although you won't be entitled to mat pay.

Worried0987 · 07/02/2019 15:58

Yes I did take that into consideration that I wouldn’t be entitled to mat pay. Should I tell them before I accept and start?? My head is all over the place, my husband is happy whatever I decide but he’s not really suggesting anything. Thank you for your input Invisimamma.

Stealhpolarbear Yes around 5-6 months I should be on mat leave

I think you can claim maternity allowance though? Might be wrong.

I’d do it, OP.

PyongyangKipperbang · 07/02/2019 16:22

Well if the contract is 12 months then presumably thats because they need someone for 12 months, not 6 and then off for 6. Legally you dont have to tell them but morally I think you must. I wouldnt be happy if I was your new employer and you took a job in those circumstances and then announced your pregnancy, leaving me looking to recruit for the 6 month period.

Worried0987 · 07/02/2019 16:55

Yes mostlyboastly I should be able to claim mat allowance.

Pyongyangkipperbang that’s my thoughts too, that’s why I’m thinking of telling them before hand, I know legally they can’t not discriminate me because I’m pregnant but at least they would know.

I wouldn’t go for it- having to tell them i’m pregnant and not able to complete the contract etc, morally I couldn’t waste people’s time

DianaT1969 · 07/02/2019 17:08

I can't think of anything more stressful for a pregnancy than joining a new company who hired me for 12 months, knowing I'd be leaving half way through. Perhaps don't burn your bridges and tell them now, making clear you'd be very interested in a contract once you're ready to go back to work.

Megan2018 · 07/02/2019 17:08

No, not for a temporary job.

Once they find out you are pregnant you may find you are suddenly not needed and with you being there for only a short time they will find it very easy to get rid of you without breaking any law. Could be a big risk if you find yourself unemployed after a month or so!

Confusedfornow · 07/02/2019 17:11

Please don't mess people around like this. Nobody will thank you for basically scamming a business out of maternity pay.

Why would you even think that was acceptable!

Seriously OP!

Megan2018 · 07/02/2019 17:13

@Confusedfornow
But she won't get any maternity pay - only maternity allowance which isn't from the employer.

StealthPolarBear · 07/02/2019 17:13

She won't get maternity pay

Worried0987 · 07/02/2019 17:49

@confusedfornow I’m currently in a full time job where I would be entitled to mat leave, just asking for peoples views on whether it’s worth the risk, I’m pretty sure I’m not the 1st person who has had this dilemma. If I do decide to go for it I will be honest before I accept because the hiring manager and the team are amazing i wouldn’t be able to go into the role without telling them before hand I personally don’t think it would be fair.
