Anyone know how to get rid of white fluff on clothes after washing machine

I'd be seriously grateful if someone can tell me how to stop clothes that have been through the washing machine having lots of tiny bits of white stuff that look like tiny slightly curly little white fibres in them (particularly noticeable on black and navy clothes). It's definitely not pet hair and the machine was only bought a couple of years ago so I know nothing with pet hair or any tissues have been through it as it's only me who uses it and I always check carefully. It's annoying because for example; a new black vest top that's only been washed for the first time would look old and scruffy even though it's only been worn once! I use washing machine cleaner every month and pick the bits out of the rubber seal round the door regularly so I'm not sure what I need to do! Very grateful for any advice!

Do you wash stuff inside out?

entersandman1 · 07/02/2019 15:26

@dementedpixie I've tried washing things inside out but it doesn't make any difference as far as I can tell

You say the fibres are in the clothes? Not on the surface? Can you pull them out?

Sorry I meant to say on, not in! My phone autocorrected! The fibres are just all over the fabric of the clothes like all over the front, back and insides of a top for example

I've never had anything like that. What washing products do you use? Is it specific fabrics affected?

Angie169 · 07/02/2019 15:49

I am not sure how you can stop it occurring but a rubber glove ( marigolds) rubbed over the clothes will get rid of lots of fluff , hair, fibres etc .

I have this issue. Every few days I put distilled vinegar in the drum and drawer on an empty wash which helps for a few washes but I've found no other solution, no idea what causes it

Toooldtobearsed2 · 07/02/2019 15:59

Have you ever washed anything with a tissue or seven in a pocket?

I did, just last month and got the expected bespeckled result on all clothes. It must have retained some bits, because the next few washes had a little bit of white flecky bits, noticeable on dark coloured stuff.

I did a service wash, and it cleared the problem.

Are you washing a towel with your clothes? Anything white with the darks? Yes, check for Kleenex or something that was left in a pocket. If not then is it the soap itself, go to a liquid soap not powder.

I have this problem too. A particular black sports top seems to pick up every fibre going, but other black/dark clothes have the same issue. Not so long ago I resorted to using wide sellotape to get rid of the fibres before wearing.

We have a washer-dryer, and I did wonder whether drying towels in the machine is the culprit.

I've just checked the label of the worst-affected top and it says don't use fabric softener, which I usually do, so wonder if that's why?

A tiny bit of tissue left in a pocket can split into a zillion tiny white specs to attach to all the other clothes in a wash. I try picking bits off by hand, tumble drying, picking bits off again. Wash again. Never found a really good way to get rid.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/02/2019 19:34

You need one of those sticky roller things. Nothing else gets rid of the bits quite as effectively.

stripeszebra · 07/02/2019 19:40

this happens to me if tissue/paper in pockets.
Tumble drying usually gets rid of all the white flecks all over clothes
Remove any bits of tissue from inside the seal of the washing machine door.

If you have done a dark wash after a light wash then any fluff left over from that will show up on dark clothes. Either do the dark wash first or do a rinse after the light wash.
