Best place to park in or near London?

I'm planning a day in London and want to know where is the best place to park cheaply. We want to go to the Tate Britain so either round there, or further out of the city (anywhere to the NW of London, that's where we're driving in from) so we can then get in on the train or tube. Please share your best ways for getting into London without it costing a bloody fortune!

There’s free parking in some resi parts of Lewisham (SE) and probably elsewhere.

Don't drive in at all. If you're coming in from the NW I'd just take the train from the nearest station to you into whatever the terminus is (KGX? Euston? Marylebone?) and get the Tube from there.

Check out the tube stations at the outer limits of your drive in.

The problem with getting the train @CountessVonBoobs is that it necessitates leaving the house at 6.30am and getting home at 11.30pm, plus it would cost over £120 (there are later/earlier trains at a zillion times the cost). Fuel would only cost about £35, plus a much smaller train/tube fare and parking costs.

Park in Westfield White City - all day parking is £9

I'm sure the parking in Lewisham is excellent but don't drive all the way there from NW of London, its quite a long way Grin . Most tube stations in zones 4 - 5 either have their own car parks or reasonably priced commercial car parks nearby, if you are coming in from the M1 I'd recommend looking at Stanmore or Edgware, both have station car parks and you can then easily catch the jubilee or northern line to waterloo for the south bank, it will take about 40-45 mins from there. Or I have used the website just park before which rents out people's driveways or small business car parking spaces, there are several in NW London nearby tube stations?

We parked here once - it's really cheap for Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

I think there's free parking at the top of the Jubilee line if you're coming from the north, or park and ride at Luton and get a fast train from there.

There’ll be free parking in residential streets in all the outer zones if you’re willing to walk 10-15 mins. If you’re coming from NW I’d aim for one of the outer Piccadilly line stations then google street view to check the parking restrictions on surrounding roads.

Underneath Brunswick shopping centre WC1. Walking distance from the West End etc.

maxelly · 07/02/2019 15:07

Or, if you are not pushed for time, it tends to be the case in London that streets within 10-15 minutes or so walk of the tube are controlled or residents only parking for at least part of the day, but if you go a bit further away there is free on-street parking. You can definitely do this on streets near Stanmore and Edgware if you don't mind adding a bit of a walk to/from your car onto your journey... look up the council websites (Barnet, Harrow, Brent) for which streets are parking controlled?

MamaLovesMango · 07/02/2019 15:08

We park at Epping or Debden (both not far from M11) and get the central line in. It takes about 45 minutes. Loads of parking and very regular trains. Think we parked for £2.50 a day at the weekend!

Barbarafromblackpool · 07/02/2019 15:08

Streets near Blackhorse Road are still parkable. Ten min walk from station. (Victoria line)

caffeinebuzz · 07/02/2019 15:18

We often go in on a Sunday, when you can park on a lot of streets for free. We try to arrive for 10-11am and never struggle to find a place, even very central.

During the week, I park in Westfield and hop on the tube. Or there may be another big shopping centre more on your route.

nornironrock · 07/02/2019 15:18

Stanmore is very easy.

But, if you are coming form anywhere near whichever line it is that goes through Rugby from Euston, booking in advance can get a very good deal - including tube tickets. The line through Market Harborough from St Pancras is much much more money.
