RING doorbell

Hi

Has anyone got one of these? Do you rate it? I'm thinking of getting one, looks like RING 2 is available now as well. It will be handy to see who is at the door!

I’ve got the first ring one and love it

Brickswithstones · 07/02/2019 14:18

Following this thread OP.
We're also thinking of getting the Ring 2 but it seems to have mixed reviews, particularly if used on a busy road.

AdobeWanKenobi · 07/02/2019 14:24

If your internet is any way patchy then you won't get the notification to your phone until long after the bell has rang sadly.

Yes. We live in a new estate and there is still some building going on. Ours was recording so many motion alerts that the battery died in a couple of months when it's supposed to last a lot longer than that. the chime was also pinging everytime it detected motion even a car driving past and was extremely annoying. You can change the settings for motion and turn off the alerts so I did that and it's much better now.

It's ok, I feel weird answering the doorbell from my phone though so I usually just have a look and then open the door or just ignore them! We already have a security camera outside with our alarm system and that is fine on its own tbh. If you don't have that then the ring is good

DaisyDreaming · 07/02/2019 14:43

We have motion alert turned off during the day and just have it set so it’s triggered after 9pm. We also got chime so it rings like a normal bell too

CatCoriander · 07/02/2019 14:55

We have had one for a year or so and it's brilliant. We initially got it because I couldn't hear the doorbell in the kitchen and you can add chimes and put them in any room in the house. It also lets you know if someone is there but hasn't actually rung the bell - happens occasionally. It was very handy when one of our neighbours thought a delivery van had clipped his car - we were able to show him the video and prove that he hadn't.

My daughter has one and lives on a busy road - passing buses were setting it off but she was able to fine tune the range and sensitivity.

I recommended one to my friend whose husband has Alzheimers and she was worried about who he was letting into the house when she was out, and an unexpected benefit was that it alerted her to her husband trying to leave the house in the middle of the night.

Can you tell I'm a fan? Smile

AcrossthePond55 · 07/02/2019 14:55

So far, we like our Ring 2. It's normally 'off' (no motion alerts) during the day because we have a front facing living room and can see who's coming up the drive already. But it is a feeling of security at night and to see if deliveries have been made.

I agree with a PP, if you have 'not so good' internet there is a lag between someone coming up/ringing the bell and the 'ping' to your phone. Sometimes it's just a second or two, sometimes it's up to 10 seconds.

NeverTwerkNaked · 07/02/2019 15:09

Following, quite interested in getting one of these.

We live quite tucked away with a drive so the motion thing probably wouldn’t get triggered too much.

I just can’t figure out if it’s worth the money or not.

Doodlebug5 · 07/02/2019 15:12

I think we were unlucky with our ring. First the doorbell button fell off and then they replaced. This one the security screw has broken so we can't remove it from the back panel. And ring customer services are not helpful. Keep telling us to jam a screw driver in to get it off.... But what's the point of the security screw if you can jam a screwdriver in and rip it out??

Megan2018 · 07/02/2019 15:13

We have one on our gates as drive and front is completely walled.

It has been challenging to get the wifi to work as it is so far from the house - but it is very useful and means I can open the gate for deliveries whilst at work!

Murinae · 07/02/2019 15:34

We have one as well as four of their security lights/camera. It works well but we pay the yearly fee.

WitsEnd2018 · 07/02/2019 16:23

Just spoken to an electrician and he says there are two types - one which has a battery which requires charging up and the other which is connected to your mains electric supply. Anyone know anymore about this?

OP posts:
theemmadilemma · 07/02/2019 16:33

It can do either with same model. If you have an existing wired, you can just swap it provided it's in the same required position.

I like mine.

GymNGin · 07/02/2019 16:34

We have one by Nest. It's mains connected.

ArfArfBarf · 07/02/2019 16:38

I have a ring camera not the doorbell so don’t know if it’s the same but I found it useless without paying the monthly subscription. I’d get a notification on my phone but it took ages to connect to video. Without the subscription I couldn’t go back and check what had triggered it.

WitsEnd2018 · 07/02/2019 16:39

I don't want to get tied into a subscription! Is this a mandatory thing if you have this doorbell?

OP posts:
Tara336 · 07/02/2019 16:41

I have one and it’s great, although I’ve found some people don’t always hang around quick enough for you to answer but I’m assuming they are doorstop sellers who are in a rush

Megan2018 · 07/02/2019 16:52

@WitsEnd2018
I wasn't really listening to DH when he told me about it Blush but I think the subscription enables you to view all of the footage via Cloud.

If you don't have the subscription you only have the live/recent feed? Or something like that anyway. The subscription wasn't much money - about £60 for 2 years I think.

ArfArfBarf · 07/02/2019 17:22

With the camera, if you don’t have a subscription it’s just the live feed. You can’t even see what happened 5 secs ago.

Murinae · 07/02/2019 18:43

Yes no subscription you just have the live feed. With you can view all the videos up to 60 days. We have it attached to the mains and we have a normal chime attached to it to.

SpringForEver · 07/02/2019 21:05

We tried it twice, returned it twice. There was a delay on it intermittently and we have excellent broadband.

After the second time I found the reviews that didn't say how great it is.

nostaples · 10/08/2019 18:49

Is it possible to link the Ring just to Amazon Echo/ Dot and not the phone? Don't like idea of being phoned every few minutes but my house is on 4 floors so would be useful to be notified when door goes.
