Nasty cold type virus doing the rounds in office. WWYD?

Yes, this again...to go in or not?. A couple of colleagues started with it last week. I didn't feel great, as though a cold was starting, on Sunday and was really achey with sore glands in neck and blocked sinuses and ears so rang in sick on Monday. It turned out that a number of other staff did too. After a day resting on Monday, I felt a bit better but not fully so on Tuesday morning so went into work. Felt worse as the day went on and went to bed almost as soon as I got home. People were still off sick from the Monday, so office pretty short staffed. I felt worse yesterday but still went in (really blocked nose and sinus pain, aches and pains) another couple of people rang in sick yesterday. People are complaining that this is just being passed round and round the office if people are going into work with it but as it's causing lack of staff, I'm torn between going in or not. BTW I'm EXTRA careful with hygiene, e.g. using hand sanitizer, only blowing nose in the loo etc but I'm thinking it might be more sensible to stay off to let myself get over this properly. Sorry to drip feed but I also have MS, so immune system could be compromised underneath everything else. WWYD?

Overthinking it a bit! Just look after yourself. If you're too poorly to go in, don't go in! Simple.

Thank you for replying. And you're completely right about over thinking. I just hate ringing in sick.

There's something similar going round here as well, baby DD had a cold last week and was miserable for the whole week. Now DP has it and he called in sick today because he's really bad (and he never calls in sick!)

Sounds like you need a good day or 2 to rest and get better, try not to feel bad! Hope you get better soon FlowersCakeBrew

Thank you mrsscamander and thanks for the Cake FlowersI so very rarely get anything like this that it's hard to know what to do. Plus, due to ongoing health condition already mentioned, I've got a real "keep going" mentality.

Other poster is correct about looking after yourself...and if you do go in work take those antibacterial wipes that say they kill viruses and germs (you can get them in pocket size packs)...and wipe shared things that you have to touch that the other sick people have touched...e.g your phone, door handle etc...you might still catch it again but that would minimise the risk of catching it...also wash your hands alot...if you can't get away from the office to do that then take another pocket size pack of baby wipes and scrub your hands...the cold and flu viruses can be picked up on our hands when we touch stuff...and keep your hands away from your mouth, nose, ears etc as that is how the virus can enter the body...

Like.i said you could still catch it if someone in your office sneezes into the air and you breathe it in....but it's still worth the time.trying to avoid catching it 😀

All good advice re hygiene which I am careful to try to follow myself. Not everyone is though and there are a lot of raised eyebrows when some people who have got it and are still choosing to go into work sneeze and cough without covering their mouths.

This has been going round my office aswell. I'm pregnant and in 3rd trimester. I've now been off 4 days. I've never had a cold hit me like this. Please stay home. There are people with reduced immune systems that will be really ill because of this virus

Bluesheep8 · 07/02/2019 09:10

hailstone1 yes, I am staying off. The ridiculous thing is, it's likely that my own immune system is reduced (MS) so I know I'm doing the right thing. I have an inbuilt urge to just keep going (probably due to MS) but now is not the time.

I'm off with the same. There's no way I could work. It's awful. I didn't even have to think twice about phoning in. I didn't even have a wash or change my clothes yesterday. I've just managed a bath now but I'm back in bed.

Bryjam · 07/02/2019 10:37

Unless you are managerial then you shouldn't consider how many staff are left in the office. You need to think about you and only you. It sounds to me like you would benefit from a long weekend, and hopefully back and fighting for for Monday Thanks

AnotherPidgey · 07/02/2019 10:39

There is a horrid "cold"/ virus sweeping round here. The DCs were both ill all over the weekend and missed the start of the week off school. Totally exhausted. My sleep adverse, lively, duracel bunny child went to bed mid-afternoon and didn't get up until the next morning. Fevers. Dizziness. Streaming snot. Hacking coughs. Loss of appetite. One of the DCs is very resilient and normally bounces back rapidly but has looked ashen for a week. DH is working light duties from home.

Rest it out. It's a stubborn one! Sometimes you just shouldn't share the love.

Bluesheep8 · 07/02/2019 15:53

Thank you for the replies. Not managerial so as a pp said, it shouldn't be my concern. I am very much an over thinker and a worrier though, hope everyone who's suffering the same is better soon

Think you made the right decision to stay home OP. I've had this horrible "cold" thing for over a week now and it's really made me feel poorly!
I was off work today anyway, but stayed in bed until gone 2pm which is not like me.
It's been doing the rounds in my office too, it's rubbish
Hope you feel better soon!

ohamIreally · 07/02/2019 18:54

This "cold" did the rounds at my place too, I was in bed for a whole day at one point- had to get a friend to collect DD from school as didn't think I could do it. I've never known a cold like it. You did the right thing OP.

MrsDilligaf · 07/02/2019 19:01

I've had it for over 2 weeks now. I came down with it while I was on leave for a week (which was a bit annoying to say the least) and felt bloody shocking. I'd have called in sick for two days if I'd been at work.

It's done the rounds. It's horrible and I feel for anyone who's got it Flowers

FrenchyQ · 07/02/2019 19:10

I've had it too....was in bed all weekend, managed to work Monday but off Tuesday , Wednesday...had to venture in today as there are only 2 people in my department and she has the bug too and didnt go in.
I've never had a cold floor me like this one has

Singlenotsingle · 07/02/2019 19:17

I've had it for a week and dp's got it now. It involves coughing, sneezing, aches, tiredness and nosebleeds. I was in bed for 2l days. Luckily I'm not working, but I can't see how you could go in feeling like this.

Singlenotsingle · 07/02/2019 19:18

2 days, not 21 Grin
