Should you wind a breastfed baby?

My baby is 16 days old and exclusively breastfed.

I've never winded him but recently I've noticed when he's redding he pulls his legs up like he might have wind?

I read bf babies shouldn't need winding but has anyone else had this?

He does fart quite a bit !

I sit my (EBF) 3 month old up after every feed and pat her back and about 95% of the time she burps, so I suppose does need winding.

Sharpandshineyteeth · 06/02/2019 23:13

I’ve breast fed 5 DC and barely winded them. Because they so often fell asleep at the breast. If they seemed uncomfortable at all then I would naturally put the up to my shoulder and wind them to see if they brought up air. I wouldn’t if they didn’t seem bothered though.

Endofrelationship · 07/02/2019 03:45

DC1 didn't need it but DC2 does. It's dependent on the child.

DD1 used to fart a lot and did a massive projectile poo up the curtains before we started to wind her. We too were told that you don’t need to wind breastfed babies...

TheOrigBrave · 07/02/2019 06:50

DS1 didn't need winding.
DS2 did.

Do it if they need it, otherwise don't.

mathanxiety · 07/02/2019 08:00

I never heard that Bfed babies don't need winding. Mine all needed it.

CottonSock · 07/02/2019 08:03

I heard this too and soon realised it wasn't true! Mine would bring.up half her milk with the air

IamPickleRick · 07/02/2019 10:53

RetroPlay I’d actually like to see that become reality 😂 A steel drum orchestra of babies being burped perhaps. They could tour and make cover albums of Rod Stewart sings.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 07/02/2019 11:11

I used to just sit mine up or put them on my shoulder after a feed. They'd let out one humongous belch straight away and that'd be it.

RetroPlay · 07/02/2019 14:40

Laughing too much at this idea, IAmPickle.
The album cover could be a version of the iconic Rolling Stones lips - but a baby. Complete with a blue shadow. Which of course you may or may not be able to see, depending on how much of a wind whisperer you are.
It will be a sensation, the new blue/gold dress, Yoni/Laurel debate.

I never winded my bf baby, I guess some babies don’t need it, but I think most do.

Roomba · 07/02/2019 14:44

Depends on the baby, in my experience!

I never winded DS1. Never occurred to me, as he usually fell asleep happily while feeding and never deemed to be windy. I assumed it was just for bottle fed babies (I knew nothing about babies before DS1, don't think I'd even held one before!)

DS2 was very different, had reflux and terrible wind. So I did wind him, or I ended up regretting it.

AnotherPidgey · 07/02/2019 14:56

DS1 used to rattle before getting giant belches. I quite enjoyed winding him! Grin

themoomoo · 07/02/2019 15:05

bf all 3 of mine ex. till 6 months and never winded them once

Littlestbee · 07/02/2019 15:06

Well I'm happy to say I've winded him after every feed since this thread and he's burped really quickly each time. Seems happier too - although it seems to wake him up so has been feeding even more!

DD needed winding, especially if I had eaten foods like peppers and other traditionally "windy" foods.

I have never heard of BF babies not needing winding before.

PlinkPlink · 07/02/2019 15:24

Ah yay! Glad it's working haha.

I had to with mine and he also got colic too which I didn't think couldn't happen with bf. 😑 it can ohhhhhh it can 😖

FfionFlorist · 07/02/2019 15:52

I bf 3 dc. None of them needed winding
