DP & I have just been reminiscing about 1/2p sweets & sweets in the 70s in general.
Favourites were :
Black Jacks
Rosy apples
Fruit Salads

Bars of highland toffee that you had to break into pieces

I likes the super shiney silver balls.

They were the size of aniseed balls, but really shiney silver. They tasted like a mix of cola and Irn Bru.

They were banned because the silver colour was toxic. Sad

I'd risk the toxicity for another 1/4 lb.

YY to brandy balls!
Foam teeth
Pineapple cubes
Coconut ice
Cola bottles
Refreshers, with the sherbert inside :)

Cola cubes, chocolate tools and rainbow pips.

Also flying saucers which I still buy now Blush

Ivegotthree · 07/02/2019 16:54

Wham bar

OneStepMoreFun · 07/02/2019 18:02

Nutty bars. Chewy fudgy toffee coated in raw peanuts. They were so good.

OneStepMoreFun · 07/02/2019 18:03

What about those rainbow coloured sugared rice krispies they used ot sell in bags.
And candy necklaces. We used to get one at the beginning of summer, and wear it and eat a few beads each day. Still alive.

Greenteandchives · 07/02/2019 18:36

Pineapple Rock
Lucky bags. Mostly nasty sweets, but you got a little gift.
Sherbet Fountains
My friend in Newcastle upon Tyne used to get me some round black boiled sweets. I think they were called Black Bullets or something. She also used to get me some that were red and white striped minty things. Can’t remember what they were.called.
We have an old fashioned sweet shop near us that sells sweets from jars.

onlyhereforthefood · 07/02/2019 19:12

@onestepmorefun - rainbow drops? I had some the other day, still sicky sweet and oddly delicious!

Fireinthegrate · 07/02/2019 19:14

Fry’s chocolate creme
Rhubarb and custard hard sweets

SpongeBoobBigPants · 07/02/2019 19:15

Treets - kind of like peanut M&Ms but only brown and tasted sooo much better. Came in a yellow bag with brown writing.

Also a half-sphere shaped boiled sweet that was like a Murray Mint but had chocolate at the centre. I think they were wrapped in shiny dark green cellophane, can anyone remember what they were called? Early 80s!

Millie2013 · 07/02/2019 19:27

Striper bars! They were fruit chew bars in bright (probably now banned) colours

A few I liked here. The Fry’s bar for sure, though I think you could also get one that was half one fruit, half another so the middle piece was half of each.

CormoranStrike · 07/02/2019 19:29

Midget gem
Licorice comfit

Margot3 · 07/02/2019 19:39

Camel sweet cigarettes. They even had the cellophane and foil wrapping like the real cigarettes!

OnTheHop · 07/02/2019 19:42

Raspberry Ruffles

There were packets of hard gums, like fruit gums but butterscotch flavour.

Howzaboutye · 07/02/2019 19:48

Cremola foam!

anniehm · 07/02/2019 19:49

Bonbons for me and shrimps for my Nanna - change from 50p. Alas I remember the 1/2p coin!

OnTheHop · 07/02/2019 20:13

Oh yes, Creamola Foam!
In a tin.
We loved that.

Howzaboutye · 07/02/2019 20:21

I remember the 1/2p coin.
I think the change to just the 1p coin was the beginning of me realising that adults are shits. Coz our 2 for a penny chews were suddenly 1 for a penny. A doubling of the price. Horrified I was, I can tell you

TSSDNCOP · 07/02/2019 20:21

I used to love a tube of Fruit Gums, but some colours were so hard I used to line them on top of the electric fire to soften them.

Nowadays I still love them, but they’re softer somehow.

Loved Blackjacks and Acid drops.

Howzaboutye · 07/02/2019 20:22

Black jacks and fruit salad sweeties are still made btw. Albeit made in Spain, rather than Sheffield. But they are pretty much the same.

Cherrysherbet · 07/02/2019 20:24

Choc ice cups

Favourite sweet - probably if you’re over 40
kateandme · 07/02/2019 21:31

does anyone remember Spanish gold (sweet tobacco)!

spinabifidamom · 07/02/2019 22:00

Aniseed balls

I used to love them. Unfortunately I can not find them anymore. I also loved those old fashioned sweets that you can find in sweet shops.
I think that it’s time to visit my local sweet shop.
